The week of September 11
Eighteen years ago on September 11, my kids were 3, 6 and 8, and I was job sharing at La Mesa. I cared for my three little ones and stayed close to the TV. I remember feelings of tremendous sorrow for the suffering and pain I witnessed. I also felt helpless, unable to do anything to relieve the suffering others were experiencing. But in the middle of devastation there were amazing displays of kindness and heroism that showed the beauty of humanity. September 12 is National Day of Encouragement. It is a day to be kind, and to commit to making a positive impact on others. The week of September 11 is a good week to remember the importance of kindness, caring for others and what unites us.
"Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost; a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11."
