Field Trip to Montgomery Biscuits Game April 13th

For the game, we are asking students to wear their red PRS shirt if they have one. If not, just wear red. Be sure to bring money for lunch unless you preordered your meal. It could rain, so be prepared with a rain jacket or umbrella. Students will be responsible for keeping up with their belongings. Parents, if you are meeting us all the stadium, meet us in front at 10:00 to get your ticket.

Birmingham Field Trip Money due April 4th!

Community 6 is taking a field trip to Birmingham, AL. We will leave school on Friday, May 6th @ 7:00 am and return that evening around 6:00pm. The cost of this trip is $64 and includes charter bus transportation, entrance into the McWane Science Center, the Southern Environmental Center, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, well as Lunch at Birmingham Southern Cafeteria. The cost may be split into 2 payments of $32.00. The first payment will be due March 4th & 2nd due April 4th. You may also pay the cost in full at anytime.

We need parent chaperones to ride the bus!!! The McWane Science Center requires at least one chaperone for every 8 students. For this trip, parents may ride the bus with the students and pay the $64 fee as well. Parents may choose to follow the bus to and from Birmingham but students must ride the bus. Parents will need to pay separate entrance into centers and pay for their lunch.

April - Invention Convention

April brings INVENTION CONVENTION. Students will use the Engineering Design Processes to design and create an original invention that will solve a problem. I have discussed with students that they should begin brainstorming problems and possible solutions/inventions. Invention Convention is designed to promote your child’s problem-solving and creative-thinking skills. Your child will be following a step-by-step process to invent a new product or develop a new method for doing something.

We will begin our preparation for the Invention Convention by learning about the engineering process as well as inventors. In doing so, I hope the students are gaining an appreciation for the invention process and will be better prepared to create their own inventions. The first step in the actual invention process will be finding an idea for an invention. Your child will be encouraged to find a problem that needs to be solved. He or she may ask if you have a need for something that will help you solve a problem. Your interest and encouragement at this stage will help to make the invention process a fun learning experience for your child.

Once your child has settled on an idea and made sure the idea has not been used before, your child will fill out a Patent Application. They will attach a conceptual model (detailed drawing and description of what their invention looks like and does along with a parent/guardian signature). I will then issue a patent and the child can then begin the planning stage. All inventions must receive a patent that will show their idea has been approved by me.

Invention Convention will be held May 17th @ 5:30pm. Look for more information next week! - Students have begun an introduction to computer coding using the site This is a non-profit dedicated to expanding access to Computer Science. Community 6 students begin with Course 2 and are working on the coding courses at their own pace. This does not need to be completed in a day or even a week. Students may work on these during enrichment or when needing a challenge. I am monitoring their progress as the move through the courses.


After concluding our unit on the Cold War, Community 6 learners learned about the Vietnam War. Learners made “histAgrams” as if Instagram was around during the Vietnam War. They were tasked with captioning pictures from the Vietnam War era as well as writing a reflection about the pictures. This helped the students understand the impact of television bringing the war into homes as it is similar to Instagram making them aware of issues today and brining those issues into the palm of their hands.Community 6 learners were then tasked to recognize the impact of music genres and artists on United States' culture since World War II through analyzing Vietnam War protest songs. We did this through song analysis of six songs about the Vietnam War.

In the upcoming weeks we will learn about the Watergate scandal and the Civil Rights Movement. After the learners gain this knowledge they will analyze protest songs from the Civil Rights Movement. Armed with the deep understanding of protest music and with the help of the wonderful music teacher, Mr. Baldwin, learners will create protest music to draw attention to modern day issues they are passionate about.

Reading & Comprehending Non-Fiction-

Over the next 2 weeks, we will be taking some time to revisit standards for reading & comprehending informational texts that we covered in the first semester. This analysis of non-fiction will also be the groundwork for our re-do of writing informational essays (a second chance for students to show mastery of the standards related to the research paper we did in the fall).

Reading & comprehending informational texts tends to be an area that many students have more difficulty with compared to reading fictional texts. Informational texts are typically structured differently than fictional stories and require more concentration to understand the main idea.

One of the best things that you can do at home to help your student with these skills is to read and discuss these types of texts with them-- newspapers, magazines, non-fiction books, brochures, etc. Students also have accounts on a website called Newsela that we use at school. This site gives them access to thousands of current news articles and also has short comprehension quizzes that go along with each article. This website is a great resource because it not only allows students to read about topics they are interested in but also allows them to adjust the articles to their reading levels (Lexile level). Common core has identified 6th grade Lexile level as starting at 925, so look for this number or higher on the Newsela articles your student is reading. Your student can also show you their progress report in Newsela that tracks how many articles they have read, their average Lexile level, & their average quiz score. I tell students all the time that reading and writing are both skills, just like playing sports or musical instruments. The more you practice the better you get.


  • Determine a central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments. [RI.6.2]
  • Analyze in detail how a key individual, event, or idea is introduced, illustrated, and elaborated in a text (e.g., through examples or anecdotes). [RI.6.3]
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings. [RI.6.4]
  • Analyze how a particular sentence, paragraph, chapter, or section fits into the overall structure of a text and contributes to the development of the ideas. [RI.6.5]
  • Determine an author's point of view or purpose in a text and explain how it is conveyed in the text. [RI.6.6]

Grammar & Punctuation Usage-

A number of students did not complete all of the grammar cases before Spring Break, but I have told them that this does not mean that they will go away. They are still expected to finish these to show mastery of the 10 standards they represent. All of the standards for the grammar cases begin with L.6.1 or L.6.2 in FreshGrade. If your student does not have a green, yellow, or red assessment mark for any of these standards, then he/she has not yet completed the test for that case and needs to work on it.

I have created a Blendspace for each of these topics with review material and practice exercises. Students can work at their own pace and can work on these topics at home. All students must begin with Case 1 and work their way up. They must let me know when they are ready to test on a Case and pass it before they will be allowed to progress to the next one.

Every Day- Students read independently for at least 30 minutes every day to work toward their 40 Books Challenge. Information on the 40 Books Challenge is posted on my Edmodo page in my folders.

Most Weeks - "Show What You Know" will continue next week to practice all skills. Fresh Grade has been updated, so look for those skills to move to green! Help your child practice those skills in FreshGrade that are still yellow! I added links for reteaching and practice in the comment sections of each skill not mastered. On new skills look in the "show" for resources. Re-evaluations are going on as requested by students. When your child feels ready, have them ask at work time for a re-evaluation.

Make Over Mondays

I will be meeting with small groups to reteach and practice skills already taught. In Fresh grade, I have added lesson and practice links to all standards not mastered. Look in the comments for each yellow dot or in the "show" section on each activity. Open Minds games are also available to practice as well on Edmodo. Students should practice to be ready for evaluation on the following skills as needed: Decimal computation, Multiplying and Dividing fractions, Exponents, Order of Operations, Greatest Common Factor,Least Common Multiple, Graphing on a four quadrant grid, Identify axis, quadrant and signs in quadrants,Graphing reflections, Finding distance between points on a four quadrant grid, Integers, comparing and ordering, Opposites, Absolute value, Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, range), graphing data, and interpreting data, area, volume, and surface area, algebra vocabulary, verbal to written phrases, combining like terms, one-step equations, independent and dependent variables, function tables, graphing equations, ratios, rates, and proportions.

Final weeks-

Students have evaluated on the ratios, rates, and proportions standards. We have now covered all 6th grade standards and will be working applying those standards. Students who show that ability to apply skills will be able to earn the blue stars in FreshGrade.

Important note from Physical Education

We need parents' help in ensure students are wearing the appropriate footwear on PE days. Community 6 boys have PE on Mondays and Fridays, girls have PE on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and boys and girls alternate Wednesdays. For safety reasons, students need to wear tennis shoes on days in which they have PE in order to avoid injury to themselves or classmates.
