GRADUATION DATE CHANGE

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Unfortunately, late yesterday we received news that the Concord Pavilion has shifted its scheduled dates for NHS graduation from Sunday, May 31st to Wednesday, June 3rd at 7pm. This move is not something that either the district or this site can control and I am told that this has happened only one other time in our 28 year relationship with the Pavilion. Regardless, the impact is being felt by many of us in truly negative ways and other options that have been explored have proven untenable given our capacity.

Please know that the current plan is to have Grad Night follow the ceremony on the evening of June 3rd. Additionally, all graduation announcements that have been ordered through Josten's will be reprinted at no charge with the new information.

We are currently working with faculty and staff in order to accommodate the final exam schedule for seniors to align with their yet to be determined graduation rehearsal schedule.

Again, while this was not our decision, we recognize and apologize for the inconvenience.

FAQ's about the Graduation Date Change

Why was this allowed to happen? Concord Pavilion has had a long standing agreement with MDUSD to donate space, time and resources to the graduations for the schools in the district. The one caveat to this is that if a concert opportunity arises, the Pavilion has the right to reschedule. This year, the district had to announce to three schools that their graduations had been affected- Mt Diablo HS, Crossroads HS, and Northgate HS.

Has this happened before? Yes, but it has only happened once to NHS in the last 28 years.

Has NHS or district admin thought about any options that would allow us to keep the date originally planned? Yes, and weighed these options heavily. Logistically and financially, they are not viable.

Why can't we have the graduation ceremony at Northgate? We did explore this option. There are several reasons why it is not one that would work. The key challenge would be capacity, in that with over 340 graduates, we would have to limit each family to a max of 3 tickets. Additional issues include parking, and parking control, security, a lack of stadium bathrooms, necessary shuttling for family members with mobility issues, chair and stage rental costs, overtime custodial fees, setup, and inclement weather contingencies.

Why can't we have it at DVC or the Lesher Center or another venue? We explored other options, and these also don't work. CSUEB does their graduations at Boatwright fields with a great amount of cooperation from the city, and huge fees for the field rental, stage and chair rental and setup, and shuttling. The Lesher Center would limit the number of attendees as hosting it ourselves would, and their rental and staffing fees are exorbitant. DVC is currently unavailable for Sunday evening, and the cost of the facility rental, chairs, stage, sound system, security, and parking staff are prohibitive as well.

How does this affect everything else? We know that it affects families and travel plans, party plans, etc. We deeply regret the impact this is having on our community. The grad night location is secured for the date move, but the committee is now working feverishly to adjust and get vendors secured again. It is likely this adjustment will be costly, and our parent organizations will be working to evaluate absorbing these costs. Senior graduation announcements had just been printed this week, and Jostens is now rushing to reprint and has announced that they will absorb all related costs for the reprint.

For events, the only other adjustment is senior finals- 5th and 6th period finals will be arranged with the teachers, while 1st and 2nd period will be June 1st, 3rd and 4th will be June 2nd.
