Message from the Counseling Center
Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness Month? A child's mental and emotional well-being has a great impact on his/her ability to learn. Think about a time you had experienced something that made you extremely happy or sad. Now think about how that event may have distracted you in your job or filled your thoughts as you went about your daily routine. In a similar way, when a child is experiencing strong emotions, it can make learning very difficult. If you have concerns that your child may be experiencing symptoms of a mental illness please consult your family practitioner. Also, please contact the school counseling department at Smithsburg Middle (301-766-8353). We will help to meet your student's needs while they are in our building. That may look like meeting with your student to help them explore and process their emotions and to learn coping skills. It may mean providing a place for a break. The school counselor can facilitate the sharing of appropriate information to the student's teachers to plan for their success in the classrooms. We are here to help your student in any capacity. If you are unsure if your child is showing symptoms or you are unsure how to start a conversation please check out:
https://www.mentalhealth.gov/talk/parents-caregivers/index.html.
Mental health issues can be displayed in a variety of ways but some symptoms are more cautionary than others, please be mindful of the following red flags with your children.
- Changes in appearance
- Changes in appetite
- Changes in sleep
- Changes in overall personality (positive or negative)
- Declining school performance
- Loss in interest of friends
- Limited engagement with previously enjoyed activities.
