New Shout Outs
- Mrs. Piekarz has gone above and beyond to make my daughter feel confident and has worked with her for countless hours just to make sure she truly grasps key math concepts. She celebrates along with me and my husband when my daughter succeeds! It’s awesome to have a teacher who has such empathy and love for her students!
- I would like to personally thank Mr. Walshire for being a caring, kind and helpful human being. I would like to thank the school nurse for continually helping my son through a rough time in his life. I couldn’t be more thankful for the accommodations everyone made for me and my son. Thank You!!!!
- A huge shout-out to Mr. Thomas for his dedication and teaching style that keeps his students motivated and inspired to work harder at their academics. My boys have LOVED being in his class day after day and are constantly working above their grade level because of his generous class incentives, encouragements, and thinking-outside-the-box assignments. You can tell that Mr. Thomas loves what he does, and students thrive because of it. We are honored to be part of his class.
Book Fair
Emergency Days
As we head into the winter season, we want to prepare for any inclement weather that may prevent us from having students in the building. An emergency day will be called when the road conditions are deemed unsafe for travel, the temperature generally drops below -30 degrees with the windchill during bus pick-up times, when a building loses water, electricity, or heat services, or when there are any other conditions that are deemed unsafe for us to be in the building.
We have two options for emergency days:
- We can initiate a remote learning day that will not need to be made up at the end of the school year. In order to call a remote learning day, notification will need to be given BEFORE 1:00 PM the day before a remote learning day is determined necessary
- We can cancel school completely and make those days up at the end of the year. A complete school closure to be made up at the end of the year will be called if the decision is made AFTER 1:00PM.
What does an emergency remote learning day look like at Millburn Elementary?
This will be a condensed day compared to our original remote learning plan last year. The day will be divided up into two halves:
9:00-11:30 Synchronous (Live) instruction
11:30-12:30 Lunch Break
12:30-3:00 Asynchronous (on your own)
Zoom links will open up at 8:55 for students.
Attendance will be taken by the teacher.
Learning activities will consist of reading, language arts, and math
The afternoon will consist of independent activities directed by the teacher. Although these activities are not required, we do encourage students to participate in these activities.
This week, teachers reviewed remote learning expectations with students so that they are prepared. They learned how to access the Zoom link, the behavior expectations for remote learning, and review Apps that may be used on these remote days.
***Please note that in the event we need to move to a remote setting for a longer period of time due to COVID, we will revert back to our original remote learning schedule we established last year.
(We are not anticipating any COVID related closures, but things do happen quickly at times. Always have a plan in the event we do need to move to remote learning due to COVID )
Winter Assessments
First, MAP testing will once again occur, this time we will be adding our Kindergarten students to this assessment. Testing will begin the week of January 10th. See the schedule below.
We will also be updating our reading levels for students using our Independent Reading Level Assessment (IRLA).
Finally, IXL, which offers ongoing measures of student progress, will be used to measure student skills. Students need to complete the diagnostic area of IXL and "fill in their stars" in order to gauge their progress. If you have time, have your child do some of this over winter break.
MLK Day Activities
