Soaring to New Heights 2021-2022 Volume 4
Principal's Message
Happy New Year!
I hope that this message finds you and yours safe and healthy. The new year has brought with it all of the resolutions, hopes, and challenges that each new year brings. And, while we are still very hopeful for 2022 and confident that #wegotthis, it's important to acknowledge that there has been a shift in our pandemic progress. Since Thanksgiving, we have seen an uptick in cases, but despite it all, we have been able to continue to provide in-person instruction in POB.
Thank you for your part in making this possible!
As each year ends and a new one begins, I try to reflect on what I've learned through the year that is closing. 2021 taught me a lot. I was reminded again and again of how resilient we are, how caring we are, and how important education is. Since September, I have been reminded again and again about how important it is, especially in middle school, to focus on social emotional development, mental health and the interplay that those have on students' ability to be successful academically.
At home, my own kids (ages 25, 14, and 12) taught me that they don't know where the towel racks are or how to get the dishes from the table to the sink to the dishwasher without constant reminders. I'm not sure if anyone else has this, but it seems like a disconnect because I've seen some pretty complex choreography created, memorized, and recorded in a matter of minutes!
At school, our shared kids (all 855 of them) have made me realize how important it is for them to have time to not be on a device. Alright, the Bowman kids have made me realize that, too - but in a different way.
Technology is a wonderful tool, something that when we control it can bring us so many opportunities to learn, to connect, even to relax. The issue is making sure that we are the ones in control, and developmentally, this is difficult for the middle school brain.
As a result of having that realization again at the end of 2021, may 2022 be a year of recognizing the power that technology wields, in a way that parallels some super powers. Harnessing that power is something that our kids will learn if there are loving limits placed on it. Here at school, our teachers are using technology to enhance instruction, to communicate assignments and to support engagement in learning. At the same time, we recognize and honor the craft of teaching and the importance of in-person interactions.
Lunch and recess continue to be critical parts of the day when students can navigate social interactions without the physical barrier of a device, which is why we don't allow phones and Chromebooks in lunch or at recess.
Whenever possible, we will have outdoor recess. That means when the temperature is above freezing and there is no precipitation, we will have outdoor recess. Please have your child(ren) dress accordingly!
Together we will continue to succeed in providing our students with opportunities that will shape their futures in ways we can barely imagine. Thank you for the opportunity to share in this journey!

In addition, our seventh and eighth grade orchestra and band students, along with Ms. DeMilta and Ms. Bernstein, welcomed our staff in the morning with music. Bringing beautiful sounds and broad smiles to the faces of all those who passed, our musicians definitely understand the power of music to uplift people's spirits!
