PACT-National History Day
Triumph and Tragedy in National History Day
National History Day competitions were held all over Iowa during the month of March. Franklin students chose to participate in either the Grant Wood competition held in Iowa City on March 16th or the Sullivan Brothers Competition held in Waterloo on March 29th. National History Day is a competition held all over world in which students can choose from a list of projects and then compete against students from other schools. This year’s theme is “Triumph and Tragedy.” The project categories are as follows: Exhibit, Performance, Website, Documentary, and Paper. Each of these can be done with other group members or individually, except for the paper which is always an individual project. PACT Students at Franklin begin their National History Day experience in January and work on their projects during the 3rd quarter. A trip to the University of Iowa library is a highlight and so helpful in finding unique primary sources for the projects. With lots of snow days in January and February this year, it was difficult to get everything completed on time. However, Franklin still advanced sixteen students to state. The State NHD competition will be held in Des Moines on Monday, April 29th at the Iowa Event’s Center. Students then compete for the opportunity to advance to Nationals at the University of Maryland in June.
Here is a list of those students and their category qualifying for State NHD this year:
- Luke O’Brien: Individual Performance- (7th grader)
- Emily Cline-Individual Performance (8th grader)
- Amelia Basler, Leighton Charters, Katie Earl, and Lucy Niemuth- Group Performance (8th graders)
- Geniva Bann- Individual Exhibit (6th grader)
- Molly Owens and Averie Keck- Group Performance (6th graders)
- Owen Kilgore and Jack Novak- Group Exhibit ( 7th grader)
- Kyle Pratt and Sam Lindwall- Group Documentary (8th graders)
- Cade Beck, Miriam Legge and Abigail Wilcox- Group Performance (6th graders)
