Dr. Chung to Offer New Seminar - Psychological Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence
Come learn about this interesting and often misunderstood area of psychology from a real psychologist! Dr. Natasha Chung is a licensed psychologist with over 20 years of teaching and applied experience in the field. Dr. Chung is currently an adjunct professor in the Purdue University Global Graduate Psychology Department, the Baker College Psychology Department, and the University of Phoenix Psychology Department. Dr. Chung has worked in school, in-home, community mental health, juvenile justice, psychiatric hospital, institutional and corrections settings as both a practicing psychologist and in management/administration. While Dr. Chung has treated patients across the lifespan, she specializes in the assessment and treatment of developmental/learning disabilities, behavioral and psychological disorders of childhood/adolescence, dual diagnosis, chronic and severe mental illness, and personality disorders. Dr. Chung holds B.A.'s in Psychology and Sociology from Cornell University, a M.A. in Clinical-Child Psychology from the University of Kansas, and a Ph.D. in Clinical-Child Psychology from the University of Kansas. Dr. Chung completed her internship at Oregon Health Sciences University Child Development Center and her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Child Study and Treatment Center. And, because learning is a life-long process, Dr. Chung will complete a second M.S. in Instructional Design and Technology in August of this year.
This research-oriented .5 credit course will take students through a series of applied (and let's be honest, FUN!) problems and activities designed to do the following:
- inform students about the fields of psychology and child/adolescent development, including common degree paths, professional licenses/certifications, and training
- develop research skills to increase accuracy when obtaining and presenting information
- introduce ethical professional decision making and treatment models
- emphasize both normal and abnormal child/adolescent development
- familiarize students with the etiology and common symptoms of child/adolescent psychological disorders
- explore environmental and societal impact on psychological disorders as well as the impact of the same disorders on society
- participate in the 'treatment' of two or more mock clients, including researching and designing the assessment and treatment process
Our class will meet 6 hours per week across 7 weeks and will require the completion of a project proposal, out of class research and activities, and the development of a minimum of 3 independent individual or group end products. Lots of support and assistance will be provided, but students will be expected to adhere to a class schedule in order to stay in and complete the class.
Please see the sign up sheet up front for seminar times and dates. Notify Ms. Jen with any questions.
Thank you for being a dragon! We appreciate you and we believe in you.
With gratitude,
Jen + the JDAL Staff
