To proceed with the civil rights movement, tactics needed to be made. Marten Luther King Jr. was inspired by Gandhi and his peaceful tactics. MLK then knew he wanted to use peaceful methods to gain Civil Rights.
Peaceful tactics included boycotting. Boycotting is when a large number of people restrain from the use of something. An example would be the Montgomery bus boycott. This occurred after the arrest of Civil Rights Activist; Rosa Parks when she would not give up her seat to a white person.
Rosa Parks
Civil Rights Activist; Rosa Parks inspired the nation to make a change. When she refused to give up her seat on the city bus to a white passenger, she was arrested. This caused a boycott of the city bus transportation. Many believe her actions caused a spark that started the fire of the Civil Rights Movement.
March on Washington
A march that consisted of over 200,000 people. The march was on August 28, 1963. The march had protesters that wanted equal rights for African Americans. When the march had arrived in Washington, D.C. Marten Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a dream..." speech. The speech talked about how he dreams of a day where all races could be treated as equals.
Little Rock Nine
In the town Little Rock desegregation is hated by many. So when the supreme court called for a desegregation of the schools the town was outraged. So in order to follow the law they needed to integrate the schools but the state also didn't want to anger the towns people. So the Little Rock Nine were created. The Little Rock nine were 9 African American students that were hand picked for their good grades and level heads. They were put through preparation to be able to deal with all the insults and threats they would receive. When they tried to attend school the national guard prevented them from entering. They didn't get to attend school until almost a month later when they sneaked in through a side entrance. That day a riot broke out making them be put through the thought of having to give up a student of one of the nine and let them be hanged in order to feed the riot. All nine ended up being evacuated. In the end they were able to go to school but they had to be escorted by the 101st Airborne Division.
2 important groups in the civil rights movement
NAACP: the group's name is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Their goal was to integrate society and to overturn segregation. The group was formed in 1904. They often supported court cases with desegregation.
