K-2 iPad Distribution TOMORROW, September 2

This is a reminder that families with a KG, 1st or 2nd grade student can pick up an iPad at school tomorrow from 10:00-12:30. If your KG, 1st or 2nd grade student has a Chromebook from the spring, please return it, along with the charging cord, at that time.

Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades will be using Chromebooks for Comprehensive Distance Learning. We are planning a separate Chromebook distribution for students in these grades that are new to Scholls Heights or need one this school year. More information will follow.

Principal Message

Dear Families,

We are very excited to welcome you back to school. Although we would love it if we could bring students and staff to the building for instruction, it is not safe enough yet. This week and next, teachers will be working diligently to prepare for online instruction. They will be attending professional development and collaborating with their teammates. We are looking forward to providing quality instruction to each and every student! It is a necessary priority to start the school year off getting to know our students and building relationships.

The student day will be from 8:30-2:30 and include synchronous (live), asynchronous (recorded) teaching, applied learning (learning that takes place independently or with the help of a parent or guardian), and wellness (movement, nutrition, and time to connect). The instructional minutes are based on guidelines from the Oregon Department of Education.

Teachers will let parents know the specific schedule for their child. Students benefit from consistent routines, connections, purposeful instruction, quality engagement, well rounded learning activities, nutrition breaks, play, physical activity and outdoor time. Attending live instruction is important but if a family is unable, live instruction will be recorded for access later.

Students are expected to be engaged in learning five days a week. However, the reality of the pandemic requires flexibility on how a student demonstrates meeting that expectation. In general, there needs to be two way interaction between the teacher and the student.

Teachers will also be grading students on the report card with the exception of behavior learning targets. Teachers will be providing feedback and collecting formative assessment data on student performance. All activities will count towards your child's overall participation and proficiency. However, they will not be providing written or oral feedback on all tasks.

You will find out your child's 2020-2021 teacher by logging on to ParentVue on Friday, September 4. There has been much thought put into finalized class placements. Teachers placed kids in balanced classes in the spring, taking into consideration Optional Parent Input Forms submitted Spring of 2020. CDL added another layer of complication with the addition of trying to balance attendance cohort days for when we transition to hybrid learning. Many hours have been put into this important work and any changes would have domino effects.

You will receive a welcome communication from your child's teacher on Friday, September 4.

The district has many helpful resources on their website. If you haven't already, please take a look. Here are a couple:

Parent Apps and Resources

Family Toolkit

We hope families will find it useful as they help support their students during comprehensive distance learning. The district will have more resources and videos in the works, and will continue to add to this page as we learn throughout the next few months.

Welcome to School Grade Level Parades

If you were at Scholls Heights at the end of the school year, you may have participated in our end of year all school Parking Lot Parade. We are very excited to host optional Grade Level Parking Lot Parades while still practicing safety measures and social distancing. Please help us with this by staying in your car. We would ask that you have a paper on your car dashboard or window with your child's name(s) and teacher.

Parents will enter the parking lot by turning right off Loon. Myself or another staff person will be at the corner of Loon and our parking lot to help direct you. Teachers will be positioned under canopy tents, spaced out in our driveway. Parents will stay in line as they circle the driveway and can pause to briefly say hello to their teacher. Parents will exit the driveway to the right.

We will do our best to make this run as smooth as possible, but please be patient with us.

Message from Music and PE

Dear Scholls Heights Families,

Welcome to another school year! The specialists are so excited to reconnect with you and your students. As we are preparing to welcome your kids on September 14th, we wanted to give you updates on how Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) will function this year as opposed to last Spring for Music and PE.

  1. Your child will have 2 Music and 2 PE lessons with their class every week.
  2. One lesson will be synchronous on Zoom, the other will be asynchronous on Seesaw.
  3. Specials will use Zoom and Seesaw exclusively for all students K-5.
  4. There will be a specials schedule sent out to families next week (The week of the 7th), along with Zoom login information.
  5. Music teachers will be distributing take home music kits for grades K-2, and 4-5 at the grade level Welcome to School Parades (Please see the schedule). 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be receiving information on ordering recorders later in September.
  6. Students will be receiving grades for Music and PE. As per usual, specialists will be collaborating on grades for all students.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out!
