Bragg Street Academy
An Inside Look:
On Tuesday, we had our first Connect and Check meeting. During this meeting, we learned more about the Tarheel challenge and Apex. We also identified at-risk students and brainstormed what strategies help motivate these students. After the meeting, I noticed that many of our students strive for the “You do-You Get” incentives and positive praise. I have included the notes from our Connect and Check meeting within the google doc for missing assignments. We will use this same document to track students missing assignments at the 4-week mark and notes will be added from our next Connect and Check meeting. Please make sure to have your students self-monitor their grades frequently. Do not assume that our students are comfortable or knowledgable with how to do this in PowerSchool. Setting up time within your class for this to happen will increase student productivity and hopefully their overall grades. Don’t forget how powerful conversations about grades, discipline, and attendance can be during your weekly advisory conferences.
On Friday, we had about 10 students participate in our first 4th quarter incentive. Students that had no missing assignments for the first two weeks were awarded the chance of winning Candy Bars at our Candy Bar BINGO games. Please continue to push your students to strive for no missing assignments. We will be recognizing our students again at the 4-week mark in the 4th quarter. The incentive has not been decided on at this time. Please ask your students what they are willing to work hard for and bring their ideas to the next faculty meeting.
Congratulations to Mr. Jackson as being honored as this month's Lee County Schools Clean School of the Month. Mr. Jackson will be honored this Tuesday at the Lee County School Board meeting. Please take a few minutes to thank for all of his hard work. This is a BIG award for Bragg Steet as I believe this is the first time our school has been recognized for this award.
This week I was also able to speak with Amanda Cagle the director or Nutrition about our Grab and Go breakfast options. If implemented, my hope is to increase safety in the mornings. As you already know, most of our students verbal and physical conflicts have happened first thing in the morning in the multi-purpose room. We currently have Ms. Roper, Mr. Lahr and Mr. Beasley-Mungin that have volunteered to be in the committee. The committee will meet several times with a plan to have Grab and Go breakfast option for several weeks as a trail this year to see if this is something that should be implemented next year.
I want to thank all of you for helping with our student situation on Friday morning. It is always scary when our students make poor choices that put their lives at risk. Thankfully he is ok. My appreciation goes out to all of you for staying calm and helping keep things as normal as possible for our students. Due to the seriousness of this situation, our students will no longer be allowed t place things in the woods. This includes cell phones. I will make this announcement on Monday. Please remind your students as well.
This coming week is Spirit Week at Bragg Street. This is a time for us, I mean the students to celebrate that we only have 5 days until Spring Break. When participating this week, please feel free to wear jeans. Please encourage our students to participate during this week.
