Parent Newsletter: March 8th

A Note From the Principal

Dear East Middle School Students, Parents, and Guardians:

We've got some good nuts and bolts details within the newsletter, so make sure to review it! Before you scroll down, please see these important reminders:

  • Please help remind your student to charge his/ her chromebook at home and to bring their charger to school every day.
  • Our lost and found is going to be donated again...very soon. Encourage your student to check the pods and the main lost and found table.
  • Our end of the quarter Tardy Party will be taking place on March 16th.
  • Our Incoming Parent Nights are coming up! It's all about the upcoming enrollment process for current students. Students do not need to attend, as this is a special VIP showing for parents. Students will learn about the enrollment through the counselors during the day.

Thank you for all you do for the EMS community!

Sincerely,

Katie Campbell

April 3, 2018 Levy Issue

The Raymore-Peculiar School District Board of Education on Jan. 18, 2018, voted unanimously to ask voters for a 75-cent operating levy increase, Proposition R-P, on the April 3, 2018, ballot. At the same time, the debt service tax rate is scheduled to decrease by 30 cents, resulting in a net tax rate increase of 45 cents. A simple majority is required for approval.

Revenue from the levy increase would be used to support key elements in the recently approved Strategic Plan. These include:

  • Incorporating additional real-world, hands-on learning opportunities and promoting soft-skill development
  • Expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) opportunities for all students
  • Expanding mental health supports for students and staff
  • Reducing gaps in achievement through additional interventions and supports
  • Establishing a market-competitive salary and benefit plan
  • Ensuring appropriate class sizes and caseloads
  • Supporting ongoing pursuit of job-related training and advanced degrees
  • Investing additional resources in facility maintenance and upkeep

The last time Ray-Pec voters approved a levy increase was in 2003. Since then, voters have approved no-tax-increase bond issues designated for construction and renovation of facilities.

Cell Phones at School

Please remind your student that their cell phone is to be turned off and stored in their locker. This is on page 18 of the Student Agenda. If a student has their cell phone with them in class, the phone will be turned in to the front office.

2nd offense: 1 hour detention, parent pick up

3rd offense: 2 hour detention, parent pick up

Dress Code Reminders

Parents, the weather is warming up and this means it is time for our semi-annual dress code reminders!

  • Clothes that fit in the Fall may not fit this Spring.
  • Students should consider bringing a light jacket or sweater to wear in colder classrooms.
  • Students with apparel that does not meet dress code will be asked to change or add a layer.

Selling items at school is prohibited

While we appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit, students should not be bringing items to sell to their peers to school; this includes slime or bracelets. Additionally, students should not be bringing funds to school with the purpose of buying items from their peers. Consequences will be assigned to students choosing to possess or distribute any item(s) unnecessary for school and/or disruptive to the school climate.

Student Attendance at After School Events

Just a reminder of Raymore-Peculiar’s expectations regarding student attendance at after school events: Students, grades K-8, need to be accompanied by an adult while attending district evening activities. This includes middle school athletic competitions, both indoors and out.

Students are expected to remain in the stands during the games unless utilizing restrooms or concessions. Middle school students will have a designated section in the south end zone on the field and will have access to the nearby visitor concessions and restrooms.
