Happy Friday, Lil Steamer Families!

Lil Steamer Families --
Our first full week of school has come to its conclusion! And what a wonderful week it has been.
Our students looked so magnificent on Picture Day on Thursday. Our students grooved to the music during lunch on Friday. The weather may have been a little toasty, but we were still able to enjoy the sun and play during recess (except for one rainy day, haha).
It has been enjoyable to see firsthand our students being kind to one another. I saw a fifth grader motivate and then assist a Kindergartener back to class. I watched a first grader be a good citizen and help pick up a classmate’s area while he used the restroom. I’ve seen students use manners and pick up litter in the hallway.
And the return of Mr. Hoese’s “Joke of the Day” on the morning announcements has students being silly once again. All in all, it has been a busy and fun week at the Greatest Little Elementary in the Universe!
Enjoy your weekend and let’s do it all again Monday :)

From the desk of: School Counselor Mrs. Meumann
I meet individually with students to do brief, solution focused counseling. As I do this, I address topics such as anxiety, friendship, anger management, loss, and family issues. My goal is to help students to develop coping skills to use for their day to day struggles. Feel free to contact me if you feel that your child could use some extra support in any of these areas. My email is tmeumann@riverbendschools.net, phone 815-589-2911.
Speech/Language Information: Mrs. Beveroth
Speech and language are different!
What is speech?
Speech is how we articulate sounds and words. For example, we need to be able to say the “r” sound to say “read” instead of “wead”.
What is language?
Language is how we use words to share ideas and get what we want. Language includes:
· What words mean
· How to make new words
· How to put words together
· What we should say at different times
If you are concerned about your child’s speech and/or language skills, please contact me by email at lbeveroth@riverbendschools.net or by phone at 815-589-2911.

Guest Reader Surprised 1C
Dr. Hogue was a surprise guest reader in Mrs. Schipper’s 1st grade class this week. He read the story, Rufus Goes To School. The story is about a sweet little pig named Rufus Leroy William III. Rufus longs to learn to read and he knows just the place to go to make it happen. All he needs is a backpack and his favorite book and he is ready to hop on the bus to school. There is just one snag in his grand scheme, he is a pig. Principal Lipid says that pigs are not allowed in school because they are messy, distracting, and start food fights in the cafeteria. Rufus is disheartened, but not discouraged. He returns again to school with other items that might better prepare him and promises to be on his best behavior. "Makes no difference," the principal intones. Suddenly inspired, Rufus relates that his true passion is to learn to read his favorite book. Finally the principal is convinced and leads him into the classroom. Rufus is overjoyed, reveling in every aspect of the school day, most of all storytime, which allows him to dream. 1C students really enjoyed the story and Dr. Hogue as their guest reader! We all hope he comes back to our classroom again!
