IRES 003 Classroom Update!

December 11, 2015

Read Aloud

We started a new book by Cynthia Lord this week. It is called Shelter Pet Squad. Our focus with this book is to discover new strategies for annotating our thinking while we read. There are many options for the kinds of thinking we collect while we read AND there are many options for the tools we use to collect the thinking. The important thing is that the jotting and writing help us to understand what we are reading more deeply.

Community Maps

In Social Studies we are learning about communities, maps and resources. Small groups of students are deciding what is important in a community. Then they are designing communities and creating maps of the community they create. This group of students is working on the rough draft of their map.

A New Fraction Game

We are starting to learn about fractions. We learned a new game called Roll, Slide, Cover that helps identify and name fractions. Look for this game in your child's Friday Folder. We hope you can play it at home next week.

Winter Break Learning!

Next week, I'll send home a list of learning activities that your child can do over the winter break. Many will be things kids can do online. These are optional, of course.

Everyone will also come home for vacation with some books that they choose from the classroom library. Please try to find time for your child to read most days over break. Send the books back to school after break.
