The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of September 23-37
Message from the principal
UHS Homecoming Week 2019 is in the books! UHS students and staff came together with members from all over the Urbandale community to celebrate our J-Hawk spirit and welcome home alumni!
We enjoyed theme dress up days throughout the week along with the parade and Street Party on Thursday night. Rains didn't slow us down. This year saw us do some new activities like hosting our pep assembly outside at the stadium due to construction around our South Gym. We also consolidated our coronation assembly (normally on Thursday morning) with our pep assembly due to construction related issues. The week was capped off with a victory over Linn Mar in our football game on Friday and then our dance on Saturday!
Moving into this week, we will return to our normal dress code (no hats, hoods, costumes, etc).
It was a fun, safe, and memorable Homecoming Week! Thank you to everyone for participating and making it awesome!! Enjoy a few pictures from the week below.

To help provide a safer parking lot experience at UHS, I wanted to remind students, families, and staff, about a few parking lot items to be sure everyone takes care of each other:
1. There is to be no student parking at any time in the East Lot next to the stadium.
2. The universal speed limit in a parking lot is 5 mph.
3. Students crossing any streets and parking lots are reminded to use designated crosswalks.
3. New this year, speed bumps have been added in the parking lot by the baseball field to remind drivers to slow speeds at all times.
WHEN PARKING IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, remember to park legally. This includes following all parking signs and NOT parking in front of mailboxes. Thank you!
PSAT sign up information
Things you should know about the PSAT:
It is a practice test for the SAT*, which is a standardized test for college admittance. The PSAT is also the entrance exam for the National Merit Scholarship program. Juniors who score in the top 3% nationally (approximately) are entered into the National Merit competition.
This is one of the highest academic honors a student may receive. This is a link for more information: National Merit Scholarship Program
*The SAT is a different test than the ACT. The majority of our students take the ACT rather than the SAT. Both are standardized exams that 4-year colleges and universities require for admittance. Here is a link that describes the differences between the two tests: ACT vs. SAT Comparison
How to register: To register, students should bring $18 cash or check (payable to UHS) to Mrs. Gibson in the UHS Counseling Office. Registration opens on September 16. Priority will be given to juniors who register by Tuesday, October 1st. Freshmen and sophomores registering prior to October 1 st will be placed on a waitlist and will be notified on October 2nd if they are not able to test. Please register soon. Space is limited.
If you have questions concerning the PSAT, please feel free to contact your student’s counselor at UHS.

Outside Athletic Participation - Information for students in activities
Outside Athletic Participation
Students wishing to participate in non-school sponsored athletics during the same interscholastic high school sports season must obtain the written permission of the Activities Director prior to competing outside of Urbandale. Students should submit requests in writing no less than thirty days prior to the event and communicate with the Head Coach regarding the situation. Coaches retain their authority to consider the amount of participation time for a student based on the student’s commitment to the school-sponsored activity.
Although approval is not required for competition out of season, when it conflicts with another school activity, students should communicate with the coach/director in season as soon as possible regarding any missed practice/contest time.
Reference Urbandale Community School District Board Policy 510.
Exciting changes at UHS continue in fall 2019 with I.E.S.!
As we continue to expand and enhance opportunities for access to teachers to support learning, UHS is rolling out some exciting changes to support students learning. We will continue to have a modified-block schedule (8 classes on Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and 4 block periods on Wednesday and Thursday along with Connections).
However, we have created time in school day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, to have guaranteed access for teachers to have with students. Students sign up on Thursdays (started August 29th) during Connections for their I.E.S. time for the next three days (Friday, Monday, Tuesday). A student will attend the same location during that three day cycle and then sign up on Thursday for a new offering for the upcoming Friday, Monday, and Tuesday.
Students largely have choice of where they go during this time, including having intervention for additional learning, extensions of learning, and study table to further learning. Intervention, Extension, and Study table, are the heart of our additional time, resulting in the name "I.E.S." There will be no additional homework tied to this time though additional learning is the focus of it.
Information for Seniors
UHS Seniors and families,
thinking about going to college after graduating, the Iowa College Access Network has a series of tools and reminders for high school seniors about college planning and financial aid.
If you would like to sign up for these reminders, click on this link: Senior Resources from ICAN
If you have not already visited a few college campuses, talk to your family about getting those scheduled in the next few months. Many colleges and universities have already opened up their applications for the fall of 2019, so you may be able to apply for admission already. The earlier you can apply, the better!
Access Network as a free resource. You can visit their website, www.ICANsucceed.org, to
schedule an appointment, or call their toll free number, 877-272-4692 to talk to an advisor.
Stay on top of the process, and be sure to ask if you have questions!

A note from Silver Cord Committe to UHS students
Welcome back to school! From the stack of hours turned in during schedule pickup and Open House, we can tell many of you did a TON of volunteer work this summer, and you invited your friends. The senior class has volunteered almost 11,000 hours during high school, and the freshmen are off to a great start with 654 hours this summer. Way to go!
Hours were updated last week -- check them here: Silver Cord Ladder If you have 40 or more hours, go see Mrs. Strong in Room 212 to pick up a free Silver Cord Volunteer t-shirt!
Do you love working with younger kids? We have lots of fun opportunities coming up, including Urbandale Team J-Hawk Football and Girls On The Run, where you can work with and inspire elementary age students. You can always find opportunities and current information at our Silver Cord information page. We try to put the current events at the top, with ongoing volunteer opportunities towards the bottom. This year, try setting up a weekly volunteering job, and see how fast your hours add up! Just read about each opportunity, choose something and sign up, and show up with an Hours Verification Form (attached). When you're done volunteering, have the adult in charge sign your form and turn your form in at the UHS Main Office. It's easy!
Remember, this is the only Silver Cord email address that is checked on a regular basis. Please send hours and questions to us!
Please turn in your summer volunteer hours to the UHS Main Office as soon as possible so we can get them added, and keep on doing good!
