October Newsletter

As the weather gets colder, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather--outside recess will be held outside as long as it is 20' or higher.
Have you heard your student talk about "Jeffy?" If you search YouTube for Jeffy, countless videos show up--SML Movies. I ask you this because the number of students who reference these videos, talk like Jeffy or show the mannerisms from the video have been on the rise. The videos are completely inappropriate for our elementary aged students and certainly nothing that we want emulated at school. There is swearing, racial comments, sexual innuendos and makes fun of people with disabilities. If you don't know what I am referring to, search it--I cannot imagine you will want your student watching it. Students who talk like, act like or reference Jeffy will be given consequences and parents/guardians will be notified.
This Friday morning we will be having our Halloween activities, along with the 1st Quarter Honors Assembly. If you plan on attending, you should have sent in your information to be pre-scanned through the machine. If you did not, you will have to wait in line to be put through the machine. Doors will open at 9:15 so that teachers have the opportunity to take attendance, lunch count and get settled in prior to the parties starting. The Awards Assembly will take place at 10:10 in the gym. We look forward to seeing you there!
Our Annual Veteran's Day Assembly is coming up! On Monday, November 11th, we will join the high school to honor our local veterans. Watch for information coming home so that you have the opportunity to take part in this awesome tribute to those who have fought, and continue to fight, for our freedoms.
As always, your contribution to our school and your student's success is so very important! If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to us.
Yours in Education,
Nelle Ratliff

Title 1 Survey
As a requirement, that survey had to be sent home with every student in the building.
Here are some Title 1 facts:
- Title 1 is a federally funded program
- The money Wynford receives is based on students who have qualified for free or reduced lunches
- The focus of our Title 1 program is to help students succeed in reading, with most of our time and resources being used to meet the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee
- Students are chosen due to being identified as "not on track" through the iReady Reading diagnostic that was given in August
- These students were put on a RIMP (reading improvement & monitoring plan) which tracks the interventions and support given, along with progress
- If your child was put on a RIMP, you were notified by the teacher recently and if they are receiving Title 1 services, a permission slip was sent home
Results of the survey will be shared with the community through newsletters and will be posted on the website. The information gathered will be used to evaluate the school and our Title 1 program.
Thank you for sharing your input with us!

Leader in Me--Habit 2
To Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen.
One of the best ways to incorporate Habit 2 into your life is to develop a Personal Mission Statement. It focuses on what you want to be and do. It is your plan for success. It reaffirms who you are, puts your goals in focus, and moves your ideas into the real world. Your mission statement makes you the leader of your own life. You create your own destiny and secure the future you envision.

It is important for your child to attend school every day. When your student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, the child misses critical instruction time and learning opportunities. This often has long-term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time.
A new state law defines excessive absence and truancy:
Excessive absence: a student misses 38 or more hours of school in a single month, or 65 or more hours in one school year, with or without a legitimate excuse.
Truancy: a student is absent from school without legitimate excuse for 30 or more consecutive hours, 42 or more hours in one school month, or 72 or more hours in a school year.
Being tardy counts towards the total hours for absences.
Please make sure to call the office when your student is absent, and also send a note to the office as a follow up. All absences require a note from home or the doctor in order to be excused.
Thursday School will be assigned to those students with excessive absences in order to make up missed educational time for 12 or more excused hours.
