Happy 2019! In 1st grade we're jumping into informational (non-fiction) texts in reading and we'll be using what we learn to create informational writing pieces. We'll focus on understanding and using non-fiction text features to better understand what we read. We will be integrating our science and social studies into our non-fiction studies as we learn more about New Years traditions, Martin Luther King Jr. as well as features and patterns within our sky. In math, we'll focus on understanding 2 digit place value in numbers greater than 20. We'll be comparing digit numbers as well. In word study, we will spend all month learning different long vowel patterns. It will definitely be a busy month!
Second Grade News
Happy New Year! We are excited to be back at our terrific school, eager to hit the ground running and get right back to work. In January, students will begin reading informational texts such as biographies and learn how to identify the main idea and the author’s purpose. We will learn how to use nonfiction text features, such as table of contents, index, diagrams, and captions to help us find important information. Students will research topics and historical figures and use the process of writing to produce informative pieces of writing. Our second graders will begin learning how to use place value to add and subtract 2-digit numbers as well as continue to use a variety of strategies to solve word problems. January weather can be very unpredictable. Please send a jacket daily with your child as we continue to have recess during the winter months and weather can often change throughout the day.

Fourth Grade News
Fourth grade has been working on many new concepts. In reading, we have finished learning different types of text features and text structures. As we move into January, we are going to be working on identifying the Point of View of a text. We will then work on comparing and contrasting firsthand and secondhand accounts of the same/similar text and/or topic. We will be working writing informative/explanatory writing samples such as biographies. We will also continue to have a focus on the conventions of writing such as grammar, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
In Science we will continue to work on changes to the Earth's surface and in social studies we will continue to work on NC explorers which could possibly tie into our biographies.
In math, we have finished working on place value and place value strategies to add and subtract whole numbers. We are now moving on cluster 4 and will work on developing strategies for multi-digit multiplication and division. We will be learning how to use a variety of models and methods to solve multiplication and division problems.
