If you want to play a sport, play volleyball! Here are some facts about the best sport in America! Forty-six million Americans play volleyball. William G. Morgan created volleyball. When he first made the game it was originally called “mintonette.” Volleyball is also the second most popular sport in the world after football. Volleyball is a mixture of handball, baseball, and tennis. William created volleyball because he wanted a game that wasn’t so physical. Volleyball has been in the Olympics since 1964. The nets are 7’4 for women and 7’ for middle school kids. The first net made for volleyball was 6’6.
The object of the game is to be the first to get to 25 points. If the game is tied, then a team has to win by two points. There are six players on a court. The rules of the game have been changed many times over the years, so if William were still alive he wouldn’t recognize the sport. Volleyball was invented four years after basketball. The sport volleyball was created for middle-aged men, but they changed that and made it a boy and girl sport. The first ever volleyball game was played in 1896 at Springfield College. William created the game in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
They made a new form of volleyball called beachball volleyball. The first beach game was played in 1930. The forearm pass did not become part of the game until the 1940s. The volleyball Hall of Fame is located in Massachusetts. There are many wonderful things about volleyball. Volleyball has a special ball just for that sport. It was created in the 1900’s.The longest volleyball game was played in Kingston, North Carolina. The game lasted for 75 hours and 30 minutes.The sport volleyball is more than 100 years old!! It turned 100 in 1995!
The craziest thing about volleyball is that volleyball players jump about 300 times in one game! Volleyball is a great sport! There are 800 million players worldwide!!
