Principal's Message
There are so many celebrations happening! The items below speak to the talents and engagement of our students here at ISB. And while these students are absolutely amazing in their own right, there is a part of me that believes it is our school that creates the environment for them to grow into the successes that they are. The ISB staff actively creates opportunities for students to pursue their passions, whether it is marching in the Rose Parade, organizing and hosting an art showcase, or designing a mystery scavenger hunt in the sewers of London based on a novel that the students read.
Our mission directs us to engage students in meaningful ways as we lead them to embrace intellectual rigor and become thoughtful, compassionate world citizens. As I watched the Battle of the Books team and the debates at JSA in Seattle, it occurred to me that the success our students enjoy is not about the awards, but rather the purpose they derive from the actual activity itself. The team that won the mystery scavenger hunt certainly celebrated at the end, but their laughter, intent focus, and internal group debate along the way was what made the experience rigorous and meaningful.

Dragons in the Spotlight
Nine of our students participated in this year's state MUN 2022 Conference. The conference, held virtually this year, was a success. Congratulations to 11th graders Luna Matti and Colin Nguyen, who served as committee chairs! Congratulations to 9th grader Anya Li, who won Best Representative for her committee! And finally, big congratulations to Luna Matti, who was elected to be one of the undersecretaries for next year's Oregon MUN!
A number of ISB students made an excellent showing at the Northwest Science Expo State Science Fair. Ronald Lin was awarded Best of Fair for life science. Additionally Ronald won top project in his category (Medicine & Health Science). Alex Lim and Irene Lim won 1st place in their category, Behavioral and Social Science. Vedant Pawar won 3rd place in his category, Bioengineering and Materials Science. Sabine Dickerson won the Outstanding Aquatic Related Environmental Science project.
A few weekends ago, 32 of our high school students attended the Junior State of America Spring State Conference in Seattle, WA. Our students engaged in political debates, discourse, and activism - it was truly remarkable and inspiring to see. ISB had an impressive showing, with a number of our students earning "Best Speaker" awards for their ability to debate, problem solve, and communicate with an audience. Here's a list of our students who won awards: Alex Lim, Serah Judd, Yipu Wang, Sidharth Mathilakath, Logan McClure, and Nicholas Shatalov. Additionally, Alex Lim was elected Lieutenant Governor for the Pacific Northwest's JSA and will help oversee the club for the entire region during the 2022-23 school year. Congrats to all!
Congratulations to our Grade 6 Battle of the Books team, the ISB Bookworms, who competed in the regional competition. They made an excellent showing, but more importantly, they read some great books. Fantastic job Chloe Chau, Dimah Matti, Vibhuti Bakshee, Saanvi Singh, and Allison Lin!
