Preparing your Child for Returning to School
Wearing a mask throughout the school day is going to be an adjustment for your child. Below you will find some tips for how you can help your child be ready for mask wearing in the weeks leading up to school:
Be honest about why we have to wear face masks, but try to keep things positive and not scary. One idea is to tell your child, “We all do things at school to protect ourselves, our friends, and our teachers. We keep our hands to ourselves so that we do not hurt someone else, we walk in the hallways and on the stairs so we don’t trip and hurt ourselves. Wearing a mask is another way that we are protecting others because it helps us to protect each other from getting sick.”
Let your child know that lots of people are wearing masks right now: teachers, doctors, nurses, police officers and firefighters. Ask your child if they can think of some of their favorite characters who also always wear a mask (Spiderman, Batman, Wonder Woman).
Let your child know that everyone at school will also be wearing a mask. Just like we all wear a uniform, we now will all be wearing masks. This will help ease your child’s concerns that they will look different from their friends when they wear a mask.
Acknowledge that wearing a masks for long periods of time can be uncomfortable at first, but reassure your child that wearing a mask will become easier and more comfortable as they get used to it.
New routines feel better when we are used to them. Spend some time each day practicing wearing a mask. Here are some fun ways you can wear masks to be ready for mask wearing at school:
Set a timer and see if your child can beat their personal best time for how long they can keep the mask on each day
While driving, have your child keep their mask on until they see a blue car. Then, have them take it off until they see the next blue car. Keep going back and forth until you reach your destination.
Play dress-up as a doctor, dentist, or favorite superhero and include a mask as part of the costume.
Put a mask on and take selfies, seeing who can make the silliest face only using their eyes
