Supporting Our Students To Be Independent
Thank you to all of the families supporting their students to develop the habits of mind to be engaged and mindful learners. Learners require different support to become independent and collaborative thinkers so here are some strategies to support student agency.
1) Students need a learning environment where they can be independent. Students need a space, this can be a corner of a room with headphones, where students can engage with their class and classwork. We are seeking to see your student's thinking and the student's ideas. Please refrain from overly prompting your kids...it's okay for them to not know something. This guides the educators to know how to support the student and plan next steps.
2) Students work best with a daily routine. Use the schedule provided by the classroom teacher, plus refine the schedule to align with the household schedule. Use tools like a timer for knowing how long to stay on a task and take breaks to talk about the learning or to switch activities. Routines also include bedtimes/wake-up times, food intake, and outside play time.
3) Students need to make sense of learning. Students can take walk-n-talks with their siblings, caregiver, or record their thinking to verbalize their learnings. How are students connecting the school learning to the real world? What questions are being formulated? The more we learn, the more questions we have.
Join the PTABy being a member of PTA and attending PTA meetings, you provide a voice as to how we build our UELF Community. The more volunteers we have, the larger our community becomes and the better we support our students and the programs in our school that foster inquiry and project-based learning instruction. | School Pictures?Thank you to all of you who responded to the School Photo Survey. The Fall Photos are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8. This will coincide with a Supply Pick-Up Day as well. Ordering information will be shared in upcoming newsletters. | Fostering the Maker MindsetDuring this time of Distance Learning, be sure to provide students with time to create. Students are GREAT at asking questions and making wonderings. At UELF, we value students using their skills to problem-solve. Making is one way to develop the skills needed for problem-solving. Send your stories to Mrs. Lunde. |
