The Riviera Press
Issue 17: Week of April 5-9
HOT OFF THE PRESS
Riviera Schools has officially dropped our "Riv Merch." For months, our Dean of Student Affairs Mrs. Lanz has been working on a special project to bring our new line of Bulldog gear to the Prep campus. The merchandise includes new styles of t-shirts, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, and stickers for our Riviera family to show their Bulldog pride all the time. In an effort to make the merchandise accessible to our Riviera family at all times, our new mobile school store will sell our merchandise during all school lunches for students to purchase. We are accepting payment by cash, check, or credit, so make sure you grab your gear and show off your new Bulldog threads!

Prepping for Calc with Mrs. Kott
Teaching at Riviera since last school year, Mrs. Kott is a mathematics teacher with classes of Precalculus, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC. This week, she began her annual Afterschool AP Review Sessions. These helpful sessions are geared to prepare calculus students for the upcoming exam in May. AP Calculus AB students meet after school on Mondays and Fridays, while the BC students meet on Thursdays. Attending the meetings is valuable not only because students get collaborative practice on multiple choice and free response questions, but also if they attend a majority of the sessions, they will receive extra credit! Though the sessions have only begun, they are sure to assist calculus bulldogs pass the AP exam!

Bulldog Banner Bonding
Spirit Week 2.0 is a little over a week away, so that means banner prep is in full swing. One of the most beloved traditions at Riviera is our Spirit Week banner wars. In this friendly competition, students come together with their grade moderators to create banners that show off our school spirit according to the theme of the year. This year has definitely been an adventure as students and teachers have navigated through this unconventional school year, so going along with the adventure theme was appropriate. Every grade is going on their own adventure this year, and their grade moderators are there to guide them. This past week, each class began working on their banners which will be hung up for display during Spirit Week on April 19 through 23. A panel of judges composed of teachers and administration will judge the creativity of the banners and choose first through third place winners. Though this is a friendly competition amongst the grades, the real value in this tradition is the bonding that takes place between students and their grade moderators as they spend quality time painting the banners and coming together as a group to create memories to last a lifetime. Make sure to check our instagram story during Spirit Week to see the final masterpieces hung up around campus!

In the Art Studio: Personalized Totem Poles in Progress
This week in Mrs. Horne’s ceramics class, students were tasked to create their own personalized totem poles. A traditional totem pole tells a story of a person or a family and is usually carved with animals with symbolic traits. For this assignment, students were challenged to use this idea of a tall stacked form to tell a story about themselves in a modern twist. Each totem pole is meant to represent the student’s personality, interests, memories, or values. Each student was required to create 4 individualized sculptures of objects or animals and spacers to spread them out in a pleasing way. Their main challenge was to find out how to place and stack each sculpture in order for it to be balanced out.
Mrs. Horne says, "After spending a year with each student, I can say with confidence that each totem pole represents each student with gusto, and I can't wait to display the final product in this year's virtual art show. I am so proud of how hard they have all worked on these!"

Summer at the Riv
Spring is here, which means that summer is quickly approaching! Riviera is once again offering enriching summer school programs for students to get ahead on their coursework and complete certain prerequisite classes. Our summer school program provides the opportunity for our students to take a foreign language; advance their required math, science, or history courses; or even complete required writing classes. Summer school allows students the availability in their schedules to take a more creative or diverse elective class during the academic school year. This year, our summer school program will be available to all students either on campus or online. Do not hesitate to sign up and get ahead on the required coursework. For more information on available courses or how to pair summer school offerings with Riviera Summer Camp, please contact Ms. Marie Castellanos at mariecastellanos@rivieraschools.com.
