Important Tips and Training for our Staff
Our Dean of Students, Mrs. Babbitt, recently completed an 8-hour training called "Youth Mental Health First Aid".
According to the Health Day Reporter "Suicide rates among teens and young adults have reached their highest point in nearly two decades".
The purpose of the training is to help us respond appropriately to a student that may appear to be in emotional distress using basic skills and knowledge.
In addition, this important information will be shared with staff to help us all become more cognizant of the issues facing the youth of today.
From the Desk of Mrs. Nugent...2020 Murphy Spelling Bee
The 2020 Murphy Spelling Bee was held in the afternoon on Monday, February 10 with 7 fifth grade participants.
On behalf of the Murphy Staff, we are very proud of our fifth graders who participated. It was obvious the students studied hard for this event. In the end, Gavin Miles became our first place champion! He will go on to represent Murphy Elementary at the Lapeer County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, March 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Lapeer County Education and Technology Center (690 N. Lake Pleasant Rd., Attica). Our second place winner was Alyssa McLaren. She will act as an alternate at the county spelling bee if need be.
Thank you for a great competition spellers!
We would also like to say a special thank you to Mr. Downey for being our pronouncer this year. Thank you to Mr. Hutton for taking care of the furniture set up and equipment needs. Thank you Mrs. Cook, Mrs. Withey and Mrs. Babbit for volunteering their time to be our spelling bee judges.
BRAVE Spelling Bee participants: Wyatt Burns, Trinity Carpenter, Olivia Hayes, Lillyanna Poulin, and Tatum Southern

Kids Heart Challenge Update
Dear parents,
We kicked off our Kids Heart Challenge event here at Murphy Elementary, and we need YOUR help. When 50% of our kids take a heart healthy challenge online, our school will earn up to $500 in PE equipment.
Go to www.heart.org/KHC and find our school to register for the Kids Heart Challenge event.
You and your child can choose a heart healthy challenge and then your child will earn a FREE wristband tomorrow at school.
We have a little ways to go for the 50% challenge but fundraising is already over goal online!!!!
Will you take the challenge and help? Deadline to take the challenge is February 27th.
Thank you for your support!

All LCS schools receive Section 31a funding.
The intent & purpose of Section 31a are to provide instructional and direct non-instructional support services for students to achieve regular school attendance, reading proficiency by the end of 3rd grade, mathematics proficiency by the end of 8th grade, and Career- and College-Readiness (CCR) by the end of 11th grade. The Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) structure is primary for Local Educational Agencies to achieve this.
MTSS must provide the following five components:
路 Team-Based Leadership
路 A Tiered Delivery System
路 Selection and Implementation of Instruction, Interventions, and Supports
路 A Comprehensive Screening and Assessment System
路 Continuous data-Based Decision Making
