Defer Dragon's Burning News
Friday, March 6th
From the Principal
We hope you are enjoying the beginning of Crenshaw with your family at home! Our One Book, One School reading event is a great way to practice reading skills at home and Sharpen the Saw.
Third and fourth graders from Trombly and Defer also participated in Disability Awareness Day on Friday. Disability Awareness Day provided students with interactive lessons to build awareness and empathy related to people who live with disabilities. Thank you to the coordinators and volunteers that made the day successful for our students.
The second marking period ended on Wednesday, March 4. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 13th. Our Defer Dragons continue to grow and learn each day. Please keep in mind that report cards and conferences are only a snapshot of your learner's progress. I look forward to our continued collaboration with your family. Please let me know how I can support you and your children at Defer.
Have a great weekend,
Dr. Rheaume

GPPSS prepared for Coronavirus response
While there have been no confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) reported in Michigan as of February 20, GPPSS is closely following updates to the guidance issued by the Wayne County Health Department, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC is currently reporting 13 confirmed cases nationwide. Therefore, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time. Additionally, there are no recommendations by federal, state or local public health officials to cancel events or restrict travel within the United States. The CDC is recommending avoiding nonessential travel to China. Traveler updates are available at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/warning/novel-coronavirus-wuhan-china. For up-to-date information on coronavirus visit www.michigan.gov/coronavirus
To prevent the spread of viruses such as the flu, common cold and coronavirus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. If not available, use hand sanitizer
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing
- Avoid contact with people who are sick. If you are sick, stay home, and avoid contact with others.
HALLWAY CONGESTION
We are well into our routines of the new year and ask that parents no longer walk their children to their classrooms in the morning. If your child is late, please sign in at the office on our late slips and we will take them to class.
SPRING WEATHER REMINDER
Defer students go outdoors for recess two times each day throughout the school year. Please be sure that your child leaves for school dressed properly for the weather. It might also be helpful to keep an extra set of clothes (pants/shirt/underwear/socks/shoes) in your child's locker in case clothes get wet and/or muddy during recess fun. This will help to avoid having to interrupt your day to bring them to school.
BEGINNING OF THE DAY
Please remember to use our 24 hour attendance line at 313-432-4001 to report your child's absence. Thank you.
END OF THE DAY
Our dismissal bell rings at 3:38. Please make sure your child knows his/hers after school plans in the morning when you drop off. The only after school care available is Kids Club. Check out Defer's website for more information. If you need to change pick up plans, please call the office before 3:15 pm to make sure your child receives the message before the end of the school day.
