Wind Direction
Weather vane
WHAT IS IT ?
A weather vane is an instrument showing the direction of the wind. Is is usually used as an architectural ornament to the highest point of a building.
WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE ?
It often has four arrows at the base with letters at the end of of them which stand for west, south, north, east and another one at the top which also has an animal at the top of it, generally a cock.
how does it work
A wind vane has the points of the compass fixed and sited, so that they point in the correct directions. Above them is an arrow that can be moved by very light winds. When the wind blows, it catches the thickened end of the arrow's and swings it round so that the arrow is pointing in the direction from which the wind has come from
