A Note from the Nurse
This week we have seen an increase in the number of flu-like illnesses. This note is a reminder of the symptoms, care and prevention of the “flu.”
People with the flu are most contagious in the first three to four days after their illness begins but may infect others beginning 1 day before symptoms develop. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. We are asking that you keep your child home if they are sick until at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (have chills, feel very warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). This should be determined without the use of fever-reducing medicines (any medicine that contains ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Along with fluids and rest, prescription antiviral medication can be used to treat flu illness. This treatment works best when started soon after flu illness begins. When treatment is started within two days of becoming sick with flu symptoms, this medication can lessen fever and flu symptoms, and shorten the duration of illness by about one day. They may also reduce the risk of complications such as ear infections in children, respiratory complications requiring antibiotics, and hospitalization in adults. The schools will continue to guard against the spread of the disease by keeping surfaces clean, encouraging proper hand hygiene and reminding students to “cover their coughs”, but your help in managing the spread of this infectious disease is greatly appreciated.
It is important to remember that the best way to keep yourself and your family from contracting a viral illness is to maintain a strong immune system. Getting plenty of sleep (8 full hours), plenty of water (600-100 ounces per day) and increases in vitamin c (oranges, guava, bell peppers, kiwi, strawberries, broccoli, tomatoes, kale, spincah papays, and snow peas). So basically just taking care of yourselves before you get sick may be the best way NOT to get sick.
