Enhancing Tourism Access in Region XII
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 12 assures to complete the CY 2013 Tourism Road Projects in the first semester this year.
These roads are expected to boost tourism and economy in SocCSKSarGen.
Last year 2013, DPWH 12 commenced the construction of five tourism roads with a total amount of about P302 Million. These roads primarily involve concreting/ upgrading and rehabilitation works, making existing and emerging tourist sites more accessible and safe to travel.
As of December 31, 2013, three tourist road projects implemented by the Regional Office has an average accomplishment of 86.97%.
The P93 Million concreting of Junction National Highway Sarangani- Davao del Sur Coastal, Pangui- Wali- New La Union Road, Maitum was substantially completed within the 240- calendar day duration which started from March 25, 2013 and to be completed on November 19, 2013 as scheduled.
This 8- kilometer tourist road leads to water tubing adventure in Pangui River in Maitum, Sarangani.
Another 7.5 kilometer gravel to pave road project with 90.23% accomplishment is along Junction National Highway of Makilala- Allah Valley Road, Brgy. Baras, Tacurong City. This P72 million tourism road is expected for completion this January 2014 is leading to Baras Bird Sanctuary. This sanctuary is the home of more than a thousand heron birds.
In the same way, road concreting along Junction National Highway of Cotabato- Digos Road to Barangay New Israel Road, Makilala, Cotabato is still on- going with 68.40% accomplishment. This 4.6 kilometer road is also targeted for completion this month, but maybe extended due to the recurring rains in the area.
OIC- Regional Director Reynaldo S. Tamayo, CESO IV already directed the contractor to fast tract the implementation of the project while assuring quality of work.
This P73 Million tourist road leads to the record holder - “Asia’s longest zip line” with 2.4 kilometer length is located.
On the other hand, two more road projects were implemented by the district engineering offices.
One road project amounting 17 million was substantially completed as scheduled on June 29, 2013 by the lone engineering district of Alabel, Sarangani Province - Sarangani District Engineering Office. The concreting of Junction national Highway along Sarangani- Davao del Sur Coastal Road to Gumasa White Beach Road, Gumasa, Glan will lead to the famous “Little Boracay of the South” for its beautiful white beach.
Another concreting project is along Kidapawan-Ilomavis Tourist Road implemented by Cotabato I DEO in Kidapawan City still under way with a 5% accomplishment. The project was temporarily suspended due to unsettled road- right- of- way issue. Negotiations with project affected families (PAF) in coordination with the National Council of Indigenous People (NCIP) is still going on.
Regional Director Tamayo cited that this road-right-of-way (RROW) issue is the leading problem that delays project implementation. Construction will not commence or continue until such problem will be resolved. “While we commit to provide safe and quality infrastructure projects on time, we also have to observe and respect PAF’s rights. To let them understand the purpose of our undertaking is always the best solution.”, he explained.
While DPWH XII endeavored in complying with the directive of Sec. Rogelio L. Singson to complete the concreting of national arterial/ primary roads by 2014. Lined up for implementation in the first quarter are six more tourism roads endorsed by the Department of Tourism XII last year. E.Torino
