6th and 8th Grade Math

With Ms. Watkins

September 4, 2015

Office Hours (math help after school)

Monday's 3:15-4:00 in room 403 with Ms. Watkins

Wednesday's 3:15-4:00 in room 401 with Miss Brockman.

This is a time when students may come in and begin their homework, work on reassessment, or just receive additional help with math. All middle school students are welcome to come to either or both office hours.

  1. Work on math material first.
  2. Keep voices down so that everyone can focus on their own material.
  3. If a student wants or needs a snack, it must be nut free.

Middle School Math Reassessment Policy

If your child wishes to reassess in Math they must meet with their teacher before or after school within one week of receiving the assessment in the red folder. For example, if red folders are sent home on Friday, your child has until the following Friday to meet with me. During this meeting your child will develop an individual plan with me to determine how they will be reassessed. Reassessments must be completed within one week of meeting with me.

6th Grade Math

This week we talked about greatest common factor (GCF) on Monday. On Tuesday we looked at equivalent fractions and converting between fractions and mixed numbers. Wednesday in the first half of the class students used the least common denominator of fractions to compare and order them from least to greatest. In the second half of class students were able to select a partner and began an assessed activity where they made a brochure on prime factorization, LCM, and GCF. The purpose of this activity was to clarify understanding of these topics and begin reviewing for a quiz. On Thursday students finished their brochures. Friday there were a variety of review activities for students to choose from in class. The two activities that students chose were fraction war (where they used playing cards to create fractions and the larger fraction won the cards) and LCM/GCF Jeopardy. At the end of class I showed students some links that can be used for online review. All of the links are in the resource page of my website. On Tuesday students will be taking their quiz on 2.1-2.5. Have a wonderful long weekend.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend curriculum night. It was wonderful meeting you.

8th Grade Math

This week began with talking about identifying true statements and using counterexamples for false statements. Following this we discussed the real number system. On Tuesday students created a "real number target". They defined each category of real numbers and provided examples of numbers that are in each category. Wednesday at the start of class I reviewed irrational and rational numbers to clarify areas of confusion. Once this was done students took a quiz on 1.2-1.3. For the second part of class we discussed adding rational numbers, and properties of addition. Thursday the focus of the class was subtracting rational numbers. To end the week students learned how to add and subtract matrices and perform scalar multiplication on matrices. Have a wonderful long weekend.

Thank you to all the parents who were able to attend curriculum night. It was wonderful seeing you again.
