OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - April 1-5, 2019
WCS Making Headlines Across the State
- WRAL Channel 5 Reporter Mandy Mitchell was at Hearne ES last week to feature the fourth- and fifth-graders in the school's Gentlemen's Agreement Program. The segment aired April 2. The Gentlemen's Agreement targets African American males and surrounds the students with mentors who guide them in becoming men of character. Shout Out! to Behavior Intervention Specialist David Applewhite and Gentlemen's Agreement and Equity Coordinator Maurice Barnes for their work with the program.
- The Wilson Academy of Applied Technology (WAAT) was featured last week in an article for WRAL TechWire. This publication highlights technology-specific news in the Triangle. The article focused on WAAT's commitment to preparing students to graduate and find careers in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and math) by not only preparing them for the careers but also by connecting students with local companies that will hire them.
Hunt Student a Disney Dreamer
Shout Out! to Ashley, a sophomore at Hunt HS, for her selection to attend the Disney Dreamers Academy in March. She was one of 100 students from across the nation selected for this incredible experience. Ashley received an all-expenses-paid trip to Walt Disney World to participate in the four-day program. She attended career workshops and heard from exciting speakers and TV personalities. Ashley's acceptance was based on her response to several essay questions - one of which was focused on her dreams. Ashley wrote about her goal to work in the medical field in order to help others live more productive lives. Ashley shared, "The program was very positive, and I was able to meet other teenagers from all over the United States that are striving to make their dreams come true. I am thankful to Disney for giving us tools to use in our journey to become successful in life."
4-H Champs
Shout Out! to all of our students who participated in the 68th annual Wilson County 4-H Livestock Show and Sale on March 27-28. It was amazing to see the students handle the animals that they raised from birth. In 4‑H, kids are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles, and they complete hands-on projects in health, animal science, agriculture and civic engagement.
Jones ES Authors
"I would like to Shout Out! the students in Ms. Kyle, Ms. Zayyad and Ms. Robert's AU Separate class for publishing their own book titled If Kids Took Over the School. The students wrote and illustrated their own stories. They wrote about what they would serve as the cafeteria manager, how hard they would work to keep the school clean as the custodian and how they would allow students to eat snacks all day if they were teachers. We are so proud of them!" - From Jones ES Principal Liz Jenkins
WAAT Mentors
The Wilson Academy of Applied Technology (WAAT) started a Business Mentor Program that allows students to network with individuals in careers that they would like to pursue. The business leaders are serving as mentors and will meet monthly with the students. They recently enjoyed lunch together and participated in a team building exercise. The WAAT staff would like to thank Greenlight, Purdue, Smithfield Foods and 3C Store Fixtures for participating.
Health Field Trips
Dancing Dads
Lee Woodard ES recently held its first annual Daddy Daughter Dance. The theme was Ties and Tiaras. The dads and daughters enjoyed a night of music, food, photos and special memories. Shout Out! to School Counselor Tiffanie Evans for organizing the event and Principal Corey Walker for being right in the mix on the dance floor!
Caring Custodians
"I just want to give a big Shout Out! to our custodial staff for taking care of our students as well as our school! They come in and check on us regularly. Here's a picture of Mr. Ferrington going above and beyond to help a student put her shoes back on." - From Fike HS Exceptional Children's Teacher Mandi Purvis
Hockey Star
Shout Out! to Hannah, a senior at Hunt HS, for competing in the USA Hockey Tier II National Championship tournament in Amherst, NY April 4-8 as part of the 19U Lady Junior Hurricanes. This is the second year she has competed in the championship, and we wish her team the best of luck! Hannah is pictured back row, far left.
Librarian Day
Ms. Gilmore’s second-grade class at Jones ES would like to Shout Out! their Media Coordinator Ms. Arizpe. April 4 was National School Librarian Day, and they gave her treats and cards to show their appreciation. Ms. Arizpe always helps the class find their favorite Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Lunch Lady books. Shout Out! to all of our media coordinators!
Virtual Lesson
“I want to Shout Out! Seventh-grade Teacher Michelle Newton and Instructional Technology Facilitator Yvette Jobe for collaborating to take students on a virtual tour inside the cell using Google Expeditions. The students had such a great time! High engagement and thoughtful questions permeated the lesson.” – From Toisnot MS Principal Wendy Sullivan
Harvard Bound
Shout Out! to Emma, a senior at Hunt HS, for her acceptance to Harvard University! Her goal after college is to enroll in a graduate program or attend medical school to pursue a career in medical research. Aside from being an academic all star, Emma is also the president of the Student Government Association and National Honors Society; a member of five additional clubs; and a member of the soccer, cross country and swim teams. She also volunteers for Special Olympics and at her church. School Counselor Nancy Boykin said that Emma is "an amazing young Christian woman who has an incredible work ethic and leads by example."

Congrats to Bentley, Terry, Tracy, Jayvion, Myaa, Jessica and Akeyah. Special thanks to Advisor Barbara Cornman for her leadership.
Shout Out! to Hunt HS Principal Eddie Doll for recently team teaching with Barbara Cornman in her Sports & Entertainment Marketing II class. Ms. Cornman and her students appreciate all that Mr. Doll does at Hunt HS!
