The Maples

Schedule Changes In The New Year
Today, we started our new Studio schedule. We still have Sustainability and Music on Mondays and Thursdays, and Art on Tuesdays and Fridays. However, we now have our time in the studios first thing in the morning, directly after Morning Meeting.
For this reason more than ever, it is extremely important that all Maples are in the classroom at 8:00 to start our day. We will begin Morning Meeting directly at 8:05 so we can get to our studio classes on time.
Reading Workshop
This week, we reviewed all the reading superpowers we learned and practiced before the break.
- Pointer Power - pointing to every word we read (one to one correspondence is important here).
- Reread Power - readers re-read to understand content and practice decoding.
- Partner Power - readers read together.
- Picture Power - readers use clues from the pictures to help them read the words.
- Snap Word Power - sometimes, we just know a word when we look at it. We don't even have to sound it out!
- Sound Power - we use our knowledge of letters and their sounds to sound out words.
Math Workshop
This week in Math, we continued to measure things in our classroom, including ... our feet! Each Maple lined up the unifix cubes, built a tower, and reported how long their foot was. The tallest was 13 cubes!
We also introduced our next Math unit, in which we are studying shapes and their properties. We read The Shape Of Things by Dayle Anne Dodds to understand how shapes make up the world around us. The Maples just did some work with glue sticks, cut out shapes, and crayons to create images from geometric shapes.
Ask Me About ...
- Playing "Just Like Me" at Morning Meeting and sharing our favorite animals and news from our vacation away from school
- Our new Meeting Rules that we follow any time we gather on the rug
- Our new clean-up song! And how we danced our way through clean up on Friday ...
- Playing in the snow outside at recess
