Be Kind to One Another
I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Steve Kerr, the Head Coach of the Golden State Warriors late last month. This man has been a hero of mine since he was winning championships as a player in the 90’s. He is a class act; confident without being arrogant, a winner who knows the value of a loss and a leader who understands that, if they don’t believe in you and love you, they won’t follow.
Towards the end of the evening the audience could ask questions of Coach Kerr. One woman asked, with kids so troubled and discouraged, finding an identity can be difficult. What advice does he (Coach Kerr) have for the youth. He responded simply, “Be kind to one another. The smallest act of kindness can have a ripple effect that you, the owner of the act, may never know”.
Wow. Those words had an impact on me I wasn’t entirely prepared for. Can it really be that simple? I thought about it first as a Principal, then as a father. My own children watch me all the time. They observe my every move and action, waiting to see what I will do. The students at Sassarini are similar. Though they won’t always tell us, our children love us and look to us for guidance.
Though Coach Kerr’s statement was meant for the youth it was given to a room of adults, and not by accident. If we wish our children to be kind to one another, we must model this behavior daily, moment by moment and forgive ourselves when we make a mistake, call it out and adjust.
Being mean is a learned behavior, but so is kindness. Let’s teach that lesson together!
Thank you for all you do, Sassarini! It’s a great day to be a Seahawk!
Maker Lab at Sassarini School!
I am so thrilled to share with you that the local Sonoma Valley Kiwanis Club has voted to fund a Makers Lab at Sassarini! Not only will this new program help support our students in their science studies, it is also a project-based learning experience where students create and work in the world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math...or STEAM!
We are so fortunate to have Lori Edwards, a former toy designer and current Mentor Center site liaison on board to teach the classes this year. She joins Ms. Ally, Mrs. Henion, Mrs. Pat, Mrs. Monterosso and Mrs. Wesson as part of our 4th and 5th grade ”Team Time” teaching team! Team Time occurs 4 days a week for 40 minutes. This is a time that students are leveled to meet them at an appropriate level. This Maker Lab is only on a “pilot” basis as we try this new rotation out and secure funding long term. Our goal is that next year, much like our garden program, teachers can sign up and take their students to the lab for science and exploration!
Thank you teachers for thinking outside the box, The Mentor Center for Lori and Sonoma Kiwanis for the support and faith!
