Riverside County

Delivering the Heart of Homeschooling

Week of April 22, 2019

Big picture

Hello Riverside County!

We hope your week is off to a great start! What do you have planned this week? Family walks in the evening are a goal for me. We've only done them a couple of times at our new house. I am hoping to incorporate them regularly. Where we live, there are hills and rocks and lots of big falcons, squirrels and all types of beautiful songbirds. Our neighborhood has large mature trees that house all sorts of critters that can fill our walks with plenty of curiosity and questions. I love to use opportunities like this to spark their interests and give unsuspecting lessons. Makes for some excellent homeschool science time!

In this week's newsletter, we spotlight Inspire's

Online Subscription Package option - Beast Academy Online!

Our 'Vendor Spotlight' features The Master Musician!

Make sure to read about both in this edition.

Also, be sure to check out Inspiration Station.

Test Prep Day in Temecula!

Can I just toot the horn for our Inspire Teachers?!? The Temecula team hosted a Test Prep Day this week for all students. I brought my two, a fifth grader and third grader, and they LOVED it! They’re anxious testers and our awesome HSTs helped them understand the test and ways to prep themselves with fun games and helpful crafts with wonderful little reminders ❤️

As an Inspire parent, thank you, Teachers, for caring ❤️

Melissa Webb's FREE Test Prep for Writing Success Webinar!

Last night I had the privilege of attending Melissa Webb's online parent webinar. I am so grateful I did! Her webinar was very informative for our upcoming state testing. Three of my kids are testing this year and this webinar was just what I needed!

You're in luck! It was recorded! Here is the information below...

Tonight I hosted my LAST live, online event for the Test Prep for Writing Success 2019 parent webinar. And, what a special and wonderful group we had. THANK YOU to all who gave of their time and energy.

If you missed it, no worries! We remembered to record it. And, as promised, before my head hits the pillow, here is all you requested.

Great News for Readers!

Inspire is excited to announce that we now offer Accelerated Reader for students in TK-12th grade! The cost for this program is just $20 per student in instructional funds and can be requested through your HST. Please note this program does not include books.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps parents manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child selects a book rather than having one assigned to them and reads it at their own pace. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them. They may also read articles of interest right on the screen. When finished, your child will take a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) In addition, when an LP meeting comes up, you can easily print up the list of books that your child read and share it with your HST.

If you are interested in signing up for Accelerated Reader, please let your HST know. They will be happy to assist you.

Every Kid in a Park!

Did you know? There is a federal public lands youth initiative to get all 4th graders and their families to experience the places that are home to our country’s natural treasures, rich history, and vibrant culture.

To help engage and create our next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates, Federal Land Management agencies, launched the Every Kid in a Park initiative. The immediate goal is to provide an opportunity for each and every 4th-grade student across the country to experience their federal public lands and waters in person throughout the school year.

Every year, beginning September 1, all kids in the fourth grade have access to their own Every Kid in a Park pass at www.everykidinapark.gov. This pass provides free access to national parks across the country.

The Every Kid in a Park pass is good for the 4th grade school year, until August 31, 2019. Information on obtaining the pass is available by visiting www.everykidinapark.gov.

This Week's Vendor Spotlight: The Master Musician!

The Master Musician's founder is Phil Pike. As a child, he took trumpet lessons and discovered his love for music. Out of high school, he proudly served 14 years in the U.S. Marine Corps Band. During that time, he took Karen Hale to be his wife and had six children together.

In 1993, he continued to pursue his passion for music by attending Red Wing Technical College in Minnesota to study Band Instrument Repair. Upon graduating, Mr. Pike moved his family to Anaheim, California where he worked as the brass tech at Anaheim Band Instruments (now Music & Arts in Anaheim) for five years. There he perfected his skills in band instrument repair. He also saw the diligence and hard work it took to run that family-owned business. This sparked a desire in him to become a small business owner to give his family a more promising future.

In 1999, the Pike family moved to Murrieta and opened a shop in an industrial part of Temecula. This housed the machines and equipment necessary to repair instruments and provided individual lesson rooms. The business grew, and they expanded to include rentals, sales, and more lessons. Eventually, the need for an actual retail store became evident. In July 2006, The Master Musician opened its first storefront on Murrieta Hot Springs Rd. With much support from local band directors and the community, the store got off to a great start.

In 2009, the business was moved up the street to a more easily accessible location. In April of 2017, a second location was added in Palm Springs, California. As Phil is now enjoying retirement, his wife, Karen, is now the proud owner of The Master Musician, now in business for 20 years!

Presently, the company proudly employs around 15 people who are all working together to provide a wide array of knowledge about the instruments they service, as well as foster a love for playing music. They constantly strive to improve every year in customer service, repair, and building music appreciation in our community. Thank you for supporting The Master Musician!

This Week's OSP (Online Subscription Package) Spotlight: Beast Academy Online

The 2019-2020 Online Subscription Package (OSP) options have been finalized, and we’re spotlighting every option - every week!

This week we spotlight Beast Academy Online!

My kids have enjoyed the Beast Academy workbook curriculum. I am so excited that the OSP offers this as one of our options!

Here is what the website has to say...

Beast Academy Online is a learning system that provides a complete curriculum for grades 2-5. The digital practice includes games, problems, and puzzles divided into chapters and units that follow the same sequence found in the Beast Academy book series.

As I was reviewing this option, I noticed a few things that I loved! The artwork and stories are engaging and I believe will draw your child in and interest them. The website is designed to allow for exploration as well as encourages mastery. There is a built-in reward system that helps your child to better their skills each step of the way. My favorite part is the fact that parents can access reports online and through email to check on progress! So helpful and convenient!

Click HERE and check this one out for yourselves!

Sharing The Homeschool Heart... It's the little things.

Many nights I reflect on the day and think of all of the many ways I could have been more successful...another read-aloud for the little ones, more math practice with the older ones, another conversation about what classes to take next semester or a more in-depth discussion about what's essential to my teenagers so I can better set them up for their fast- approaching adulthood. I go to bed thinking I'll have a grand new plan for the morning and every morning I wake up to the same chaos that keeps me from checking every box on my list. You would think that I'd learn it never works as planned after doing this day in and day out for almost 11 years. But I don't. I think we all don't because we want more and better for each of our kids. I think that's what makes us the best educator for our children as well. Hoping and dreaming and desiring more for our kids is a good thing. It can also be one of the most significant difficulties we face. All of the thoughts and ideas and good intentions can clutter our homeschool day and distract us from the most crucial part that makes the homeschool lifestyle successful. The time we spend together, the eye contact we make while we're discussing math or what we're going to have for lunch, the side-by-side instruction as we teach our kids to use the washing machine, stove or dishwasher, the problem solving skills, the critical thinking skills and all the hard work they see us put in and put in alongside us is what builds a beautiful home education lifestyle. Make time for math, and do it well. Make time for language arts, and do it well — the same for history and science. But, don't forget that in those in-between moments where it may seem that something insignificant is happening can be where the most significant impact is made. If your day doesn't go as you planned and you feel frustrated that you're not checking the boxes you think you're supposed to every day, week or even every school year. Rest assured, each moment you spend with your child educating them, learning alongside them, planning for the next day, planning for the next year, it all makes a very significant impact. Don't worry if it feels like it's not working. Each day is a stepping stone to the next. The time builds on itself; the lessons build on themselves. Before you know it the child who couldn't read, is. The child who couldn't multiply, can. The child who wanted nothing to do with school, ever, starts to show interest and asks for you to show them what the workbook lesson says or brings you a storybook and sits in your lap. If you are putting in the time investing in a relationship with your kids where you walk through life learning together, then the desired results will trickle in. A little here, a little there. Before you know it, your child is filled to the brim with a rich education that you all mostly stumbled through. Isn't that what we want? Keep going. Keep making your lists but give yourself grace when you don't check off all the boxes. The years pass quickly. The inevitable exhaustion of the home educator ebbs and flows - stay the course. Keep moving forward day by day. I promise to tell myself the same as well. We're in this together!
