Hillside News Brief
March 8, 2019
Elementary Inclusion Week is Next Week (March 11-15)!
Elementary Inclusion Week is a district-wide event highlighting our inclusive school community. Hillside students will be participating in Inclusion Week in the following ways:
Monday: students will be highlighting their superpower/star power. Classrooms will be talking about what makes each of us super/amazing/special (and a STAR). We are all more alike than different, though we each have unique strengths. Students will write (or dictate) what makes each special on a paper star and grade levels will display them in our halls.
Tuesday: On this day, Teamwork Tuesday, students may wear a jersey representing their favorite sports team. Teachers will be discussing teamwork with their classes and making suggestions about recess games that can include all students.
Wednesday: This is Be a Rockstar Day. Students write something that rocks about their class or their classmates on the link of a paper chain. We will be linking these chains together and displaying them.
Thursday: Throwback Thursday is a day students can dress representing any decade. There are many possibilities for students, and this should be a fun day. Our school community will be looking back from where we came and then looking forward to creating new friendships.
Friday: Futuristic Friday is a day on which students may dress like their future desired career! It takes all kinds of people to make our school and our world a great place!
We are looking forward to some fun activities during Inclusion Week that remind us we are more alike than we are different!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are Tuesday, March 12 and Thursday, March 14
Rescheduled Conferences are now Thursday, March 14
The March 7 elementary conference night will be moved to Thursday, March 14. We do have a conflict: the 6th grade Transition Night at WMS is at 6:00 PM the evening of March 14 for half of the elementary schools (Hillside, Prairie Lane, Oakdale, Paddock Road, and Swanson). Sixth grade teachers at Hillside will offer a conference after school with parents on Wednesday, March 13, if you are planning to attend the Transition Night for 6th grade on Thursday, March 14.
Hillside teachers will work with parents to reschedule conferences, and we are committed to being as flexible as possible. Please let us know how we can assist so that you have your parent-teacher conference time!
Hillside School Dance
The Hillside School Dance is coming! The dance will be Friday, March 29, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. 402 BBQ will be on the scene to serve dinner for those interested. Also, the Community Club will be organizing teacher raffles and silent auction baskets in order to raise funds. There will be a DJ, glow sticks for sale, a selfie station, and fun for the whole family! Admission is $1 per person. We hope to see you there!

6th Grade Vocal Music Festival
On April 2nd, all of Hillside’s 6th graders will be going to Westside High School to perform with several choirs from the middle and high school, along with each 6th grader in the Westside 66 District, as part of the District Vocal Music Festival! The sixth graders have been working very hard on their music, and we are excited to perform for you at the high school! This is a chance for our sixth graders to see all of the wonderful opportunities that exist beyond Hillside! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sing with a group of roughly 800 students!
Information:
- Westside High School – 7:00 performance – please meet in the gym at 6:40 on Tuesday, April 2nd.
- Please have students dress nice! Nice pants and shirts, dresses and skirts, etc.
- Set up a location to meet with your child after the concert. It can get pretty crowded!
