The role of having a motherboard in your computer is to allow many of the components to communicate and to work with each other, many of the other components are attached to the motherboard or either connected to it. It is almost like the motherboard is the central part to your computer, it is the part of the computer that brings all of the components together.

The CPU
The CPU is the part of the computer that acts almost like a brain, it controls all of the instructions that you give to your computer, has to go through the CPU like if you press the letter (s) on your keyboard and then it appears on your screen, the CPU is the function that makes this possible. Like a computer the CPU has a number of components, for example the (ALU) in the CPU is used for more simple instructions, the (CU) in the CPU which manages different components of the computer.
