Notes from the Principal
Dear MacArthur Families,
This week our first graders performed a musical called, “Spaced Out”. The first graders sang songs about our solar system and did a fantastic job. A special thanks needs to go out to Mrs. Christen for helping our first graders prepare for their adorable musical & performance.
I am not sure where this year is going, but it is already that time of year to start having conversations about the IREAD-3 assessment. All third grade students in the State of Indiana have to take and pass an assessment called, IREAD-3 in order to be promoted to fourth grade. Click here to view a few sample questions. The testing dates for IREAD-3 at MacArthur will be March 16th, 17th, & 18th. The IREAD-3 assessment is a very short window. If a student is absent during the first testing window in March they only have one chance for a make-up test in the summer. Please mark your calendars and please avoid any appointments or vacations during the week of March 16th. Thank you in advance for your support.
Have a Great Weekend.

News from Our School Counselor
Parents,
The way a child acts and reacts to different situations can provide information about his or her self-esteem. Parents can promote self confidence in their children by first recognizing signs of low and high self-esteem.
Signs of low self -esteem:
· Avoids new and unfamiliar experiences and situations
· Puts down their own abilities
· Blames others for mistakes
· Easily influenced by others
· Easily frustrated
· Defensive and easily hurt by criticism
· Continually wishing to change appearance
· Does not participate in class (raise hand or talk in a group)
Signs of high self-esteem:
· Approaches new situations and challenges willingly
· Proud of themselves
· Learns from their own mistakes
· Accepts helpful criticism
· Confident or accepting of appearance

Vegetable of the month
Did you know there are three common types of pea pods? There are Snow Peas, Garden peas and Snap peas. Snow peas are also known as Chinese Pea Pods, since they are often used in stir-fry meals. They are flat with very small peas inside. The whole pod is edible, but “tough” strings along the edges are removed before eating. Garden Peas are also called sweet peas or English peas. Garden peas have pods that are firm and rounded, and the round peas inside need to be removed or shelled. The peas are sweet and can be eaten raw or cooked. Snap Peas are also known as sugar snap peas. They are a cross between snow and garden peas. You can eat the whole pod either raw or cooked.
Honey Glazed Pea Pods and Carrots
2 cups sliced carrots
½ pound snow peas, trimmed
3 TBS butter
½ tsp cornstarch
2 TBS honey
Bring large saucepan of salted water to a boil. Add carrots and cook until tender crisp 10-12 minutes. Add pea pods and cook until tender crisp; drain and set aside. Melt butter in the same pan and stir in cornstarch. Return carrots and peas and stir in honey. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until heated through.
Students who purchase a lunch will get to try pea pods on Thursday February 13th!
