Waterford News
November 2015
From the Desk of Mrs. Overton
It’s hard to believe that we’re entering the holiday season. I would like to wish a very happy Thanksgiving to all our Waterford families and our great Goshen community.
Thanksgiving is the time of year we all reflect on our many blessings. Although life is filled with many challenges, this is the time of year we are grateful for the kind people in our lives who love and support us so that our students believe, achieve, and succeed. I am personally thankful for my family, my friends, my faith, and all those at Waterford (staff, students, and families) who make it a blessing to work here each day. I wish the best to each of you as we approach Thanksgiving 2015!
Sincerely,
Katrina Overton
Principal
Parent/Student Lunches
In order to promote parent participation at Waterford, we will be having a number of special lunches to encourage parents to eat with their child this year and then spend time completing a craft activity with them after lunch.
On Wednesday, November 18th 2015, we are inviting the parents of our 2nd/3rd Graders to join us for a Thanksgiving Lunch. After lunch, time will be provided for you to do a special activity with your child in their classroom. Additionally, we will also be raffling off a turkey for those parents who attend the luncheon and craft activity.
Tickets will need to be purchased ahead of time. More information will be forthcoming.
Nurse News
Cold/flu season is right around the corner. Here are guidelines regarding when to keep your child home from school: Temp of 100 or higher, diarrhea or vomiting within the last 24 hrs, severe cold symptoms. Please notify the office each morning if your child will be absent or send a note when he/she returns to school explaining the absence. The best offense is a good defense! Get good sleep. (10 hrs a night is recommended for elementary kids.) Dress for the weather. Eat a well balanced diet. Drink plenty of water. Wash hands, wash hands, and wash hands!
Media Coverage
There will be times when pictures and/or videos are taken of your child at school or school events. Those pictures/videos may be used and he or she may also be identified by name for Media coverage of school events, to be posted on school websites, added to a slideshow, etc. If you do not wish to allow video/photography of your child made, or your child to be identified, you must fill out a form, available in the office. Please stop in the office to fill one out, or call the office at 574-533-6811 and we will send the form home with your child. Thank you.
School attendance makes a big difference in the education of a student. On average a student has about 9 absences a year. If they reach more than that in a school year, it has been proven to affect them academically. Here are a few guidelines to improve school attendance:
- Students are to stay home when they have a fever, vomiting or diarrhea. They are to return to school when they are 24 hours symptom free. If they are given antibiotics, they need to have been on the antibiotics for more than 24 hours before they can return. Our nurse, is more than willing to assists students that "don't feel well" or have minor complaints. Once a student is in the school that is half the battle.
- Make sure to call in all absences to have them verified. Please read our Goshen Community Schools manual to review procedures of verified and non-verified absences. Actions are outlines for excessive absences, whether verified or non-verified.
- Goshen Community Schools does a great job at providing breaks within the school year to allow for scheduled days off. Please plan all vacations and/or doctors appointments (if non-life threatening) around these breaks in the year.
