Challenges and Solutions
Culminating Part 4
By: Manroop Duhra
Nurses face don’t face that many challenges, their job is very simple and straightforward. There are two types of nurses, a practical nurse and a registered nurse. Both nurses have the same job but different work settings. I’m going into both careers becoming practical first then going into registered. The challenges for both nurses will be similar.
Firstly, an emotional or patient attachment can be a very difficult challenge. A lot of nurses get attached to their patients, it’s very easy for a nurse to get attached to a patient because they are with them for most of their day and they are the ones who take care for them. When the patient struggles or is in pain. For example being on the life ventilator or life support the patient within themselves only has a beating hurt the other organs are struggling to stray and alive and we don’t know how much pain they are in. Even when the patient dies, it’s very hard for the nurse to cope with that loss after all the patient was family and nurses aren’t people who don’t have feelings. It’s important for a nurse to have a healthy relationship with a patient. Therefore, this is one of the challenges that every nurse faces. The solution to this problem is to be understandable and know that the state the patient was in, it's going to happen and be positive about the situation.
Secondly, since nurses have a lot of co workers, all of these co workers do not always get along. Nurses are always working in high speed, especially in our local hospital which is Brampton Civic. My experience at Brampton Civic is an okayish experience but since i've been to the hospital so many times, I've seen many conflicts between nurses. During my recent visit, I saw 2 nurses fighting over ATC charts and medication, blaming one another saying “you didn’t give the medication that's why the patients upset” and they kept talking back to one another. These nurses were arguing setting a bad reputation for themselves. Nurses don’t always get along and that's okay but being calm and patient is one the traits you need to have in order to become a successful nurse. Therefore, trying not to argue back with a co worker can be a challenge for some nurses. The solution to this problem is to stay calm and collective, if you are being blamed for something that you have done, you should take full responsibility for that situation and not lie about anything. Always try to keep a healthy relationship with your co workers.
Thirdly, Patient satisfaction is also challange. At Brampton Civic there are so many people that come every day and nurses do not know who they are, what their like. Its very hard to satisfy someone you don’t know of. Some patients do not understand that nurses are taking care of several other patients and that you have to wait for your turn. Instead of understanding that patients get up from their seat without thinking the whole situation and start to yell at nurses. There are more patients and some can be severely sick or injured than others. The hospital system is organized in the way it is and no nurse can change that for a patient. Therefore, patient satisfaction can be a challenge. There is nothing a nurse can do in this situation they can keep the situation calm by making the patient understand or make it worse. Overall the only way a nurse can solve this is by making the patient understand the hospitals system and that they are not at fault in this situation.
In conclusion, although a nurse is a very straightforward job, nurses do face some challenges and have to think of solutions. The major key to being a successful nurse is to stay calm instead of very rushed. Therefore, these are the major three challenges.
