Fall Newsletter 2021.2022 SY
Message from the Principal
Hello Parents,
The administration and school staff members would like to thank you for your support this school year. We appreciate your flexibility, kind words and feedback as we work through aspects of the school year that are different than before the pandemic. Time is flying by with the ending of our first marking period. We are very impressed with our students, who are making the most out of the Hodgson Career and Technical experience through engaging in learning, working with fellow students and teachers, having a Growth Mindset, and maintaining a positive attitude.
As a reminder, should you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's learning here at Hodgson Vocational Technical High School, please contact their teachers or counselors. We want to make sure you are well informed of all the academic/career subjects and curriculum your child is learning. Please also note that a wealth of information regarding our programs, can be found on the school/district website at hodgson.nccvt.k12.de.us. Finally, you can follow us on Twitter- @HVT_SilverEagle. Please Take Care!
Your Principal,

Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity at Hodgson Vo-Tech
Hodgson Vo-Tech has created training opportunities for our staff to develop a Culturally Responsive Teaching approach, which helps to shift toward providing our students with a greater connection between their academic and career classes and their personal, cultural, and linguistic experiences. This will help to heighten student engagement and more meaningful learning.
When students SEE themselves, when they are a part of the content, and even the approach to their education, learning is no longer passive, it is a collective, collaborative process.
Hodgson is moving forward in the creation of our Student Diversity Task Force which is named FAM (Forever A Movement) These are student-focused groups (created by our students for the students) with the guidance of faculty leaders within our school.
· Latin Unidos
· Pride Gen Z
· Black Student Union
· Bible Club
· Ladies Groups
· Boys to Men
These groups are student-led groups that will be creating activities and programs that will help to promote school community for all.

Attendance Office
Early Dismissal
If a student is to be dismissed from school prior to the end of the school day, a note indicating the reason for and time of the dismissal must be on file with the attendance officer no later than 8:30 a.m. on the day of the dismissal. No early dismissal will be granted without verification by the parent. (A phone number where parent can be reached must be on the note.) Every effort should be made to schedule appointments during non-school hours or on days when school is not in session. Students that are 18 years of age may not sign themselves out from school.
Tardiness to School
All students are expected to be punctual to school. Students who arrive after the late bell are tardy. A student who is tardy or late to school should present a written explanation for the tardiness. An excused tardy is given when the student provides, at the time of the tardiness, a written note of explanation from the parent/guardian for reasons such as personal illness, medical appointments, or appearance in court. Students should recognize that a written explanation from home does not automatically cause the tardy to be “excused.” An unexcused tardy will be given for such reasons as car trouble, personal business, heavy traffic, child care, needed at home, etc. Students tardy for unexcused reasons will be referred for disciplinary action.
ATTENDANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Parent:
- Send an email to HVT.attendance@nccvt.k12.de.us for early dismissals. Please include the student's full name, time of dismissal, and telephone number for verification.
- Provide written explanation for student absence by 3rd day of return to school.
- Provide written excuse for late arrival at time of return to school.
Student:
- Attend school regularly.
- Be responsible to ask teacher to provide make-up for all assignments or tests missed due to absenteeism.
- Provide written documentation when absent or tardy to school. Regardless of time of late arrival, students must sign in.
The Teacher Academy of Early Childhood
The Early Childhood Students are off to a great start for the new school year! The preschool program is in full swing. After over a year, the children are back in the building. Everyone is excited to learn and meet new friends.
The high school students are excited to be back in the building also. Seniors are working in the field on co-op. Juniors set up the preschool classrooms, are planning preschool lessons, working with the preschool children, and are learning about program planning. In the next few weeks, they will be certified in First Aid and CPR. Sophomores developed the weekly preschool themes, are planning preschool lessons, working with the preschool children, and learning about child development. Freshmen are busy exploring career areas and they have had the opportunity to work with the preschool children in the Early Childhood Program. Everyone is busy learning, young and old!
There are still some preschool openings in the afternoon preschool for 4 year old children. Please refer any families that are interested to the Hodgson website. There is a link to Hodgson Preschool.
Culinary Arts
The 10th grade culinary arts class has been busy. They have just completed cooking an entrée with sautéed chicken with either vegetable rice or alfredo potatoes with sautéed zucchini and red peppers. We have also had The CIA (Culinary Institute of America) in for a cooking demo. We had celebrity Chef Robbie Jester (who beat Bobby Flay and owner of Full Circle Foods and Great Big Jerk) in to do a Shrimp Scampi pizza and work with the students. Also scheduled, celebrity Chef Dana Herbert winner of Cake Boss and “King of Cakes” will be in this November to work with our students and demonstrate techniques for baking.
Starting in November, 10th grade culinary arts will be making meals for The Ronald McDonald house. This will be a student lead endeavor that will have the students learn and execute a pre-made meal business. Culinary Arts has also started a Coffee Corner for the staff. Teachers will be able to come down and get a fresh cup of coffee with all of the fixings during the work day. All Culinary Arts 12th graders are on Co-Op, this is our programs 10th year of 100% Co-Op. We currently have three students working on their dual enrollment class at The University of Delaware Hospitality 101 class. The Hodgson culinary program is also proud to announce that we have two graduates currently working in the RYRA (Registered Youth Registered Apprenticeship) program to earn their certifications. Only four states in the US are doing this right now.

National Honor Society
National Honor Society hosted a in person hybrid leadership program with Seigfriend Youth Leadership Program and University of Delaware on October 20th. We hosted the event in our Media Center and were able to zoom with Guest Speaker, Juan Bendana. We had 10th – 12th grade students. It was a wonderful experience for our students to lean into leadership and walk away with some practical tips to engage in the community and encouraged growth mindset.
The SYLP has been a part of Hodgson NHS for the past 6 years, we have participated in every event and our advisor, Mrs. Bench, was also featured on their Blog. Check out her Article, “Debunking common myths about youth leadership”!
Fall Sports At Hodgson
Basketball Game Reminders for Students!
Attending basketball games is a privilege for students, and failure to follow the rules will result in you being banned from attending games. Below are a few reminders about expectations of students at basketball games.
MASKS MUST BE WORN AND WORN PROPERLY AT ALL TIMES…. NO EXCEPTIONS
The cost to enter boy’s basketball games is $5.00 for everyone this includes entrance into the JV games. Once you pay to enter you are not to leave the gym to go to your car, the dollar store, etc. All students should enter the gym through the gym lobby. Girls basketball games do not charge admission.
During the game you should remain in your seat while play is going on. You should not be standing in front of other spectators or walking on the court at any point for any reason. When walking to the bathroom you should not step on the court for any reason, if possible, you should wait until play stops before you go.
There is no sitting on the bottom row of the bleachers. This allows for more space for the players and officials. This includes putting your bookbags on the floor. There are signs posted on the bleachers.
ALL STUDENTS ATTENDING THE GAME MUST HAVE THEIR OWN RIDE HOME. The 6:00 bus is for athletes and students staying for extra help. It is not intended to be used for spectators, there is limited space on the busses.
You are expected to clean up after yourselves by putting your trash into the trash cans not leaving it on the floor or in the bleachers.
Due to COVID, no food or drinks will be permitted in the gym.
Paying your $5.00 to enter the basketball game does not give you or your guests the right to act however you choose to. There will be zero tolerance towards yelling at the refs, players, or coaches. There is also zero tolerance for entering the court before or during the game. Failure to abide by these rules will result in removal from the game.
