Sabercat Update
January 19, 2021
Our school was recently recognized as a 2019 - 2020 Educational Results Partnership (ERP) Honor Roll School for our high achievement in student success. The ERP Honor Roll program, sponsored by the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE), is part of a national effort to identify higher-performing schools and districts that are improving student outcomes. Smith Middle School is one of 3,490 public schools in the nation to be recognized.
The 2019 - 2020 ERP Honor Roll utilizes public school student achievement data to identify successful schools and districts. Our school stands above others in the state because of our demonstrated ability to get students to grade-level achievement and beyond.
Schools that receive the ERP Honor Roll distinction have demonstrated consistent high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement levels over time, and a reduction in achievement gaps among student populations.
Testing for F2F Students
Dear Sabercat Families:
We at Smith Middle School know students can achieve their full potential when they feel safe, secure, and supported. One of our District policies is a commitment to preventing and addressing cyberbullying behaviors.
The consequences can be suffered by both the victims of bullying and those who inflicted distress on their peers. Very few students, if any, who engage in these behaviors are fully aware of the short-term and the long-term effects of students who are targeted by bullying behavior.
As you know, cyberbullying usually occurs off school grounds and outside of school hours. You can call law enforcement for serious cyberbullying issues that occur at home. To some degree our hands are tied at school in dealing with issues that occur away from school, but we still want to be part of the solution.
Smith Middle School has lessons and units that are dedicated to analyzing and discouraging cyberbullying behaviors. In advisory classes, students have District Project Safety Lessons and No Place for Hate Lessons dedicated to providing opportunities for students to learn the behaviors and expectations of safe and responsible digital use. Additionally, Smith staff do not allow phones to be out and used during school hours unless teachers give permission for students to use their electronics for educational purposes during instruction in the classroom.
We also urge you to take time to speak about this very important issue with your children, so they can be clear that cyberbullying others is not an innocent behavior and that it can have devastating consequences to both the perpetrator and the victim. Please discuss what it means to be a bystander and empower your child to take a stand when witnessing cruel behaviors by reporting the behavior to adults.
As school staff, we understand the importance of our partnership with you. Please check with your child regularly to see if they are the object of cyberbullying. We know that children can be quiet, even to their parents or friends, because they fear the bullies, and they fear bullying will become worse if they bring authority figures into the situation.
Our District website provides a valuable internet safety cyberbullying resource for parents and guardians. This will be a great first step for parents and guardians to understand cyberbullying and discuss cyberbullying at home.
