Summer Reading Challenge

From the Librarian!

Dear Parent/Guardian,

We are gearing up for summer break, and hope students can relax and enjoy the sunshine. We also want them to keep their minds active while they’re away from the classroom.

You may already know that we offer free digital books through OverDrive (, which provides 24/7 access to eBooks and audiobooks. What better way to engage your student’s mind than through reading? This summer, OverDrive is offering the OverDrive Summer Read program which is another way to keep students reading during summer break. A collection of Juvenile and Young Adult titles will be available for students to borrow beginning June 1 through 30. Simply visit to access the titles.

Boredom is not an option this summer. Encourage your student to check it out today!

Robotics Update

Schmucker sponsors two different robotics competitions during the school year, the VEX Robotics Competition and First Lego League. This season, we are looking to expand our program to offer this opportunity to more students. To be able to accomplish this, we are looking for any area individuals or businesses who are willing to make donations to help support/sponsor our teams. We also have need for parents that are willing to help coach our FLL teams next year. No robotics experience necessary. For more information, please contact Matt Reininga at

The VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) is a worldwide robotics competition where teams of students work together to design, build, and program a robot to compete in a game-based engineering challenge. Last season Schmucker fielded two VRC teams that competed at local events with one team receiving an invitation to the Indiana State Tournament.

First Lego League

First lego league is a robotics competition where teams of students work together to build and program a robot using Lego Mindstorms that is able to complete a series of challenges. In addition to building and programing the robot, students research and solve a real world problem related to the theme for the season.

Chromebook Information

All current 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will be able to retain their Chromebooks over the summer and can use them for summer school and summer camp activities and for personal use. PLEASE remember students and families are still responsible for the care and maintenance of their personal Chromebook.

If students have issues over the summer and need their Chromebook serviced, parents/students will need to take it Penn High School during summer school hours (M-F 7:30 - 11:30 AM). You will enter the school at Door “A” and we will repair it and email you when you can pick it up. Chromebook loaners will not be issued during the summer.

If you are a current 8th grade student, you will need to bring their middle school Chromebook to Penn High School during the first week of school to exchange it for their new Penn Chromebook. The middle school Chromebook needs to be in good repair at that time, minus normal wear and tear.
