College and Career Happenings

September 2016

Welcome back to the 2016-17 school year

Welcome back to school! This is the first issue of the 2016-17 school year. Subsequent issues will be posted on the College and Career Information page (under Student Support Services) on DGN's website on the 15th of each month. This issue is primarily dedicated to the needs of seniors. Below is information on the college application and financial aid processes.

Seniors: Planning for life after DGN

All seniors recently met with counselors in groups to work on their post-high school plans and learn about the College Application Procedures. The session began with a review of the resource pages shared with the students as Juniors. These resource pages are researching careers and majors, researching colleges, COD exploration, and researching military options. Students were given time to use these resources again and then fill out a survey detailing their current plans. Next, specific sections of the College Application Procedures were reviewed and demonstrated in Family Connection. Students were given time to begin working on their plans.

Students can sign up for additional help sessions by using the links below for Essay Writing Tips and Application Completion Sessions.

Seniors who are applying to colleges are encouraged to do the following:

  • Get organized-Colleges require a variety of documents and have varying due dates. Using specific college websites to organize materials needed and due dates is a must at the start of the year! There is a College Application Organizer in the "document library" in Family Connection for student use.
  • Check email-Important updates will be sent using school email.
  • Apply early-Early applications will get the greatest admission consideration and possibility of a scholarship. Some colleges connect housing access to when students have applied as well.
  • Apply smart-Be sure to apply to at least one academic and financial safety.
  • Use net price calculators-All colleges are required to have a tool on their websites to help families estimate their cost. Often the cost changes based on a student's merit and financial need.
  • Visit again-If students visited campuses over the summer, consider visiting again to see what the campus is like with students. It is the student population that gives each college its personality. The visit is the best way to determine if the school is a good fit.

Students are encouraged to sign up for college and military visits in the College and Career Center and monitor the Scholarship section in Family Connection regularly. Directions can be found below.

Contact the College and Career Center with any questions about post-high school planning and the College Application Procedures.
