Farm to School Week
Mrs. Ackenbom's little ponies made three apple pies on Friday during our math rotation. We enjoyed eating one of them during lunch, but then wanted to donate the other two pies. After careful thought, we all decided to give one pie to the custodians who stay late and have to eat dinner at school and the other to the women who baked the pies for us even after having to make lunch for hundreds of students. There were smiles all around and it was a lot of fun to fill someone's bucket full of love and thankfulness!
Donating our apple pie to the lunch ladies
Zyir loves farm to school week!
Yum!
Oliver shared his very creative Harris Teeter model with us this week.
Braxton impressed his friends with his Crozet Car Wash model.
Mokie Monday
We began our Equine Studies unit this week with a big kick off this past Monday. All First Graders visited each classroom to watch a video clip about our pony Mokie, learn about the horse books we have in our school library, and make a horse craft. We will visit Camp Friendship where Mokie lives this Thursday. Please let me know if you have any questions about our trip and meeting Mokie! :}
Book It
The Book It calendar was sent home in Tuesday folders if you wish to participate. Color in the picture for each day after reading 15-20 minutes with your child and send it back to me at the end of the month. You will then receive a Pizza Hut coupon for a free personal pan pizza. Below are an electronic version of the calendar and further information about the program. Happy reading!
Our Camp Friendship Field Trip is this Thursday, October 15th!
Our field trip to Camp Friendship is finally here! We will have a rotation of three Equine Studies activities during our field trip on the 15th including a hay ride, grooming lesson, and a horse care/feed routine theory. If you have any questions at all, please let me know! Also, don't forget about the free Fall Family Day on October 17th if you want to visit Camp for a fun day outside!

About Mrs. Ackenbom
I am from a military family and grew up in several areas around the United States. I received my B.A. from the University of Mary Washington in American Studies. I enjoyed Mary Washington so much that I decided to stay and get my Masters of Science in Elementary Education. This will be my ninth year as a teacher and I love being a part of a child's individual learning journey. In addition to teaching, I am passionate about horseback riding and being active outside. I am very excited to be working at Crozet Elementary this year!
