Buses and Cars and Students OH MY!!
You may park for 15 min for free in any metered spot within 3 blocks of the school. If you do not have a parking pass, Heather in the office can give you one.
In the afternoons, we are strongly recommending that you exit and enter the campus from the ramps at the north and south ends of the blocks. Buses will be pulling up to the wall and it is extremely unsafe to walk between the buses in the bus zone. The staircases are for students exiting and entering the buses.
We realize that this is very inconvenient parking at the Ramona, so we recommend that you drop your student off at Chapman main campus and have them ride the bus. It takes approx 10 min.
In the mornings, the bus from Chapman Main will leave at 8:05. There will no longer be an early bus and a late bus, there will be one bus at 8:05. If you student is on another bus that is late getting to Main Campus, the Ramona bus will wait. This happens very rarely, so please make sure if you are a walker you are getting your student to the main campus by 8:05.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you, but please remember that these changes are for the safety of our students.
I was wondering....
I was wondering about FIRE DRILLS and other EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.
Portland Public Schools (PPS) has an Emergency Management Department that supports schools in preparing to deal with the same types of emergencies that threaten any work place or home. Fires, natural disasters, contagious diseases and increasingly, criminal activity require preventive and response measures. More information about the PPS Emergency Management Department can be found on the PPS website http://www.pps.net/Domain/70
Make sure when you visit the website to sign up for the Public Alerts Emergency Notifications. This allows the school district to contact you immediately in the case of an emergency at the school. In the case of an real emergency, our first priority is securing the safety of the students. Fire & Police would take over the management of the emergency and we would begin parent reunification after public safety officials permit us to do so.
At the Ramona we have a scheduled fire drill each month. Teachers and students leave the building and stage on Raleigh Street in front of The Abigail. This is a street that is closed to vehicles. We take attendance and sweep the building to ensure that all students are out. Students are asked to walk quickly and quietly, leaving ears free to listen for instructions and to look away from the building. We can evacuate the building in approximately 4 minutes. In the case of a real fire, we would move into the Abigail court yard and main lobby.
We also have 4 other types of emergency drills.
Earthquake Drills (twice a year). Students are taught to get under tables and then evacuate the building.
Lockout Drills (once a year) occur when their is a potential danger outside of the school. We lock the doors of the building and do not allow entry until the danger has passed. Students and staff continue their work inside the building.
Lockdown Drills (twice a year) occur when there is danger inside the building. Students and staff lock themselves inside their classrooms, pull the shades and turn out the lights. In a true lockdown situation, teachers would also barricade the door to ensure that no one enters the room. Doors are unlocked by law enforcement when the danger has passed.
Lockout Team Response (once a year) occurs when their is a medical emergency or some other non-threatening incident that requires that we control the movement inside of the school. Students and staff are required to stay in their classrooms, but can continue their daily routines until the situation has been addressed.
The Chapman School community has been working for several years on preparing for a Cascadia Event (earthquake). We are beginning that work at the Ramona this year. If you are interested in being a part of the Earthquake Prep Team at the Ramona, send Ms. Kruger an email dkruger@pps.net.
