Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and your families. I hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable winter break. It was wonderful to see all the smiling gorgeous faces on Sunday! I can't believe it is 2016 and we are nearly half way through the school year. We have had a busy and long week, especially with the full Tuesday. We started new units in reading and writing and will be beginning a new math unit this week also.
I realize there is a lot of information in this newsletter but there is a lot going on here at ASD. Thank you for taking the time to read through the newsletter.

Important Information from ASD
New Entry to Campus Procedures
Starting January 17th, 2016 there will be some changes for students and parents entering the ASD Campus supporting student safety. All students will be required to scan their Dragon Wristband entering and exiting the campus. It is recommended that you remind your child to wear their wristband daily. Replacement Dragon bands may be purchased at the front desk of the Administrative entrance for 50 qr. Wristbands will be distributed to Lower Elementary Students next week by their teachers. Your childs dragon band will be labeled with their name by a key tag. We kindly ask parents to keep this label on the wrist band for easy identification.
Parents and domestic staff will not be permitted through Gate 5 for morning drop off. Students
may enter through Gate 5 using their wristbands and teachers will be there to supervise starting at 7:40 AM. Parents wishing to accompany their children to classes are asked to enter through Gates 8 & 10.
Pick-up procedures will remain the same, parents will be able to enter and exit the campus through Gate 5 from 2:45 - 4:15 PM. Pick up procedures for PACT Tuesdays and our Pre-K Students will also remain the same, parents will be able to enter through Gate 5 at 12:15 PM. We kindly ask parents and guests to enter through Gate 8 during the school day. We thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we work to keep our school safe and continue the improvements to the ASD campus.
Change to logging on to NVS
To improve the security of student accounts we are going to change the students' NVS passwords from 12345678 to a unique number for each student. Next week, or soon after, you will get an email containing the new password. This password should be used from then on when you log onto NVS. If you have any problems or questions please feel free to contact me directly by email at pblacklock@asd.edu.qa or through your son or daughter's classroom teacher.
CURRICULUM UPDATES
Mathematics
We have wrapped up our week-long focus on telling time to the half hour, quarter hour, and to the nearest 5 minutes. Additionally students determined if many daily routines happened in the a.m. or p.m. While digital clocks are all around, us the skill of reading an analog clock is still an important one. Please be encouraged to continue practicing with your child frequently

Reading & Writing
Reading: In our new unit ‘Following Our Character’s Footsteps’, students are thinking about the clues the author gives us about external traits and internal thinking to discover more about our characters. They can make predictions about their characters based on the behaviors the characters exhibit, discuss their actions and how these relate to their character traits, and talk about the overall journey their characters take by retelling the story.
Writing: In this new Realistic Fiction genre students are investigating the structure of stories and they learn that characters face problems, overcome problems with help from others, and develop resolutions. Realistic fiction stories include believable characters who undergo a conflict or change in realistic settings and end with some kind of resolution. They will develop characters through various techniques, using dialogue and character's actions that 'show-don't-tell'.
