In 1993, Ruth Davis was elected to serve on the Zion Elementary School District 6 Board of Education. Ruth will tell you being a Board Member is hard work. “We have to be prepared. We have to read a lot. We have to stay up to date on legislation and current trends in education. We have to be organized.” Thankfully, the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) offers a wide range of Board Member conferences and trainings; with topics ranging from budgeting to best hiring practices, from how to be a good board member to speaking with local legislators.

Throughout Ruth’s tenure she participated in a variety of educational opportunities available through the IASB. In fact, she recently received the prestigious IASB Legacy Board Member Award. Ruth earned over 1,800 IASB training credits during her time with the ZESD 6 Board, reinforcing her belief that education is critical.

“EDUCATION IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT THING WE CAN PROVIDE OUR KIDS. YOU HAVE TO TRULY CARE ABOUT EVERY CHILD IN THE COMMUNITY TO BE A SUCCESSFUL BOARD MEMBER, BECAUSE WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR EDUCATION.” -Ruth Davis

One extremely difficult and unique situation the board faced was the shutdown of the Zion nuclear power plant, which meant ZESD 6 lost an enormous amount of tax revenue funding. “It was amazing we were able to keep the school district afloat,” Ruth shared. One of the privileges she had was being a member of the Taxing Bodies Committee from its very start.

Representatives from each taxing body worked together with David Knabel, Director of Accounts and Finance for the City of Zion and Mayor Billy McKinney, previous mayors and our Federal and State Legislators. We were so excited to hear just a few months ago that the State of Illinois is coming through with funding to make up for storing the nuclear fuel rods at the lakefront. This additional revenue will directly impact and improve the education of each student at ZESD 6.

“When I talk about all of the things we have done, it’s not just me. These are not my accomplishments, these are the accomplishments of the entire Board. The president has no more power than any other board member. I am only one of seven.”

Following her retirement, which officially begins May 2, 2023, Ruth looks forward to spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Una situación extremadamente difícil y única que enfrentó la junta fue el cierre de la planta de energía nuclear de Zion, lo que significó que ZESD 6 perdiera una enorme cantidad de fondos de ingresos fiscales. “Fue increíble que pudiéramos mantener a flote el distrito escolar”, compartió Ruth. Uno de los privilegios que tuvo fue ser miembro del Comité de Asuntos Fiscales desde sus inicios.

Los representantes de cada comité trabajaron junto con David Knabel, Director de Contabilidad y Finanzas de la Ciudad de Zion y el alcalde Billy McKinney, alcaldes anteriores y nuestros legisladores federales y estatales.
