This week...
Reading
This week in reading, students worked really hard on their first ELA MAP test of the year! Students also reflected on our first reading pre-test and worked in groups to edit and revise their initial responses. Students learned about how to find a "just right" book.
In word work this week, students learned the words: astonished, sensible, reluctant, diligent, leisurely.
Math
In math this week, students worked really hard on their first math MAP test of the year! Students also added multi-digit numbers and checked whether the sum was reasonable (2.2), subtracted multi-digit numbers and checked their answers (2.3), and
This week we also began chapter 2! Students used rounding to estimate sums and differences (2.1).
Your student will be coming home with their chapter 1 tests today. You will find a reflection sheet, a pre-test & corresponding cover sheet, and a post-test & corresponding cover sheet. Please take a look at your student's growth and sign/return the tests next week. Please keep in mind that there is NO expectation that your student knows any of the content on the pre-test.
The math cover sheets are new to Walden this year. They are to help understand where students are at in their learning of each standard. Please ignore all writing in the "Questions" column. These are notes to help me score. Please take note of the "Score" column. This is where I mark whether each student is not yet working on grade level standard (N), progressing towards mastery of grade level standard (P), or mastery of grade level standard (M).
SCIENCE
This week students worked extremely hard in science! They learned about characteristics of earthquake resistant buildings and watched videos of how earthquakes affect buildings. They then did reading about different structures that buildings include to help prevent too much damage from earthquakes. Students then worked with their table groups to come up with a model for an earthquake resistant building. They had to follow certain criteria and constraints. Students began building their models and we will continue to do so next week!
Ask About...
Here are some questions you can ask your child:
- What are some books you explored this week?
- Can you use the word diligent in a sentence?
- Subtract 4,568 - 3,943. Then check your answer.
- Tell me about the building model you and your group built in science.
- What is a characteristic of a "just right" book?
