Reading / Lectura
In February, our readers be reading informative texts. Our monthly skill will be using text features to locate information. Some new thematic vocabulary we will use in all our lessons are city, dessert forest, lake, land-form, man-made, map mountain, natural resource, region, ocean, state.
In March, our readers will continue to read informational texts. Our skill will be identifying a cause and its effect. Some new thematic vocabulary words will be light, sound, vibrations, volume, wavelength, reflection.

Writing / Escritura
February: We will be writing a book review, creating valentines day cards for our pen-pals in LA and Texas. We will also be writing the ingredients to a valentines trail mix we will sell in our store.
March: We will be writing about our recipes. We will also write a descriptive piece about how sound waves travel.
Febrero: Estaremos escribiendo una crítica de libro, creando tarjetas de San Valentín para nuestros amigos por correspondencia en Los Ángeles y Texas. También escribiremos los ingredientes en una mezcla de San Valentín que venderemos en nuestra tienda.

Math / Matemáticas
February: We continue to focus on Math in the real world. We will do this by completing word problems having to do with maps and coordinate points, and identifying shapes in the real world.
In March we will be using money amounts to figure out if we can afford something, using time to help set a schedule, and learn about rays, lines, and line segments.

February is Black History Month and Presidents Day so we will have shared read alouds about biographies of past Americans who have changed our country for the better.

Music / Música
4th Grade Chorus has grown to 92 students and 5th grade Chorus now has 112 students! The Hillcrest music department is preparing students in the 5th Grade Orchestra and Band and a select students from the Chorus for the March MIOSM concert coming up on March 12 at 7pm at the Middle School. Beginners and 4th Grade Band and Orchestra are preparing for their first concert at 7pm at Hillcrest on March 5.
4th Grade General Music classes have been learning about Rondo form and performing songs about Ice Cream with Boomwhackers. We are also reading and performing rhythms including half notes. In February, we will be learning about Marian Anderson, the first African American opera singer at the Metropolitan Opera for Black History Month.
¡El coro de 4to grado ha crecido a 92 estudiantes y el coro de 5to grado ahora tiene 112 estudiantes! El departamento de música de Hillcrest está preparando a los estudiantes en la Orquesta y Banda de 5to Grado y a estudiantes seleccionados del Coro para el concierto MIOSM de marzo que se realizará el 12 de marzo a las 7pm en la Escuela Secundaria. Art / Arte
This month our fourth grade artists are practicing color theory by mixing colors in an array. This STEAM project combines math, art and science through collaboration! Students will explore color mixing in an organized arrangement using food coloring and droppers. They will work together to make color predictions and discover how colors change when mixed!
Este mes, nuestros artistas de cuarto grado están practicando la teoría del color mezclando colores en una matriz. ¡Este proyecto STEAM combina matemáticas, arte y ciencia a través de la colaboración! Physical Education / Educación Física
During the months of February and March, students will be participating in volleyball, floor hockey and a gymnastics unit. During our volleyball students will learn to execute basic volleyball skills such as passing and serving. Students will learn how to set, bump, and serve the volleyball. At the end of the unit students will be able to identify the rules of a volleyball game, and will successfully participate in Newcomb which is a small sided volleyball game. In our hockey unit students will learn how to properly hold a floor hockey stick and learn how to stick handle, pass and shoot. At the end of the unit students will participate in a round robin tournament where they will be able to identify the different positions, players and rules in floor hockey. They will have the opportunity to compete in a real floor hockey game. For our gymnastics students were asked to come to class with an open mind. The primary goal of our gymnastics unit is for students to manage their bodies in a variety of different ways. By the end of the unit students will be able to perform a variety of rolls and rotations.
Durante los meses de febrero y marzo, los estudiantes participarán en vóleibol, hockey sobre piso y una unidad de gimnasia. Durante nuestra unidad de vóleibol, los estudiantes aprenderán a ejecutar habilidades básicas de vóleibol, como pasar y servir. Los estudiantes aprenderán cómo colocar, golpear y servir el vóleibol. El objetivo principal de nuestra unidad de gimnasia es que los estudiantes manejen sus cuerpos de diferentes maneras. Al final de la unidad, los estudiantes podrán realizar una variedad de ruedas y rotaciones.
