EDUCATING LEARNERS TODAY...BUILDING GLOBAL LEADERS TOMORROW
Parent Teacher Conferences
Wednesday, December 6th from 12:30 to 4:00 pm and again from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Parent Teacher Conferences which are being held on Wednesday, December 6th from 12:30 to 4:00 pm and again from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This is the time that you get to have a conversation with your child’s teacher regarding their academic and social progress. While preparing for your conference, consider having a conversation with your child. Ask them about their own academic strengths and challenges. What their favorite subject is, and what they like/dislike most about the school day. On the day of your conference:
Remember that each student’s conference will last approximately 10 minutes. Please be on time for your in-person or virtual meet. Should your conference be a phone call, please be available during the specified time of the call.
Develop a list of topics you want to discuss with the teacher. This includes any academic or behavioral concerns that you may have. Preparing a list of questions will help you make the most of your time.
Relax and be yourself. Remember that you and the teacher both want the same thing which is to help your child. Remain calm and respectful as collaborative communication will be the most effective way to work together with your child’s teacher.
If you and your child’s teacher create an action plan to assist with your child's progress, make sure your child understands that the plan is to help them be accountable and that they will be supported by you and the teacher by following through on its implementation.
Finally, stay in touch with your child’s teacher. This will help you strengthen the parent-teacher partnership and will be an important part of your child’s success in school.
Black Men White Coats
Valley Stream District 30 and Clear Stream Avenue school is committed to providing opportunities for our students outside of our community to broaden their perspective on college and career readiness. The medical field has historically faced challenges in achieving representation and diversity, particularly among black men. Recognizing this disparity, the organization black men in white coats was founded in 2013 with a mission to address the underrepresentation of Black men in medicine and to work toward reshaping the face — and color — of healthcare. On November 16, the Renaissance School of Medicine in collaboration with Stony Brook’s Black Men in White Coats chapter — the first on Long Island — hosted more than 500 third through twelfth grade students, educators, parents, college students, healthcare professionals and community leaders from across Suffolk, Nassau and New York City for Stony Brook’s inaugural Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit.
Six Clear Stream students of diverse genders and backgrounds were chosen to attend. Elementary and middle school students participated in hands-on activities related to medical fields. Some of the most popular hands-on activities were using stethoscopes on patients, learning how to give and take eye exams and interviewing mental health professionals. Liam Rahaman, a sixth-grade student in Mrs. Dougherty’s class stated that “It was very educational and would be great if more students who were interested in the medical field could attend.” Clarissa Sauval remarked that “ Being there helped her to understand the different specializations that are available in the medical field and helped her to build a greater appreciation for that.” Students seeing themselves in these professions will hopefully inspire them to work in the medical field.
Turkey Trot
Clear Stream students consumed about 2,000 to 3,000 calories during Thanksgiving dinner this year. Add in pre-meal snacks and a serving of your family's famous pie, and that number probably exceeded 4,500 calories.
Prior to Thanksgiving dinner, Clear Stream students burned off calories to make way for their Thanksgiving Day dinners. We wanted to teach our students the importance of staying healthy during a time where we tend to overeat. That is where our Turkey Trot came in. Mr. Greiss and Mr. Hansen devised a plan for our children to keep track of how far they ran using little paper cups. Every six cups represented a mile. In total Clear Stream students ran 366 miles. That is the equivalent of driving to Virginia Beach. Congratulations on being fit and staying healthy! Gobble gobble!
CLEAR STREAM CARES
The Clear Stream Cares Team under the direction of Mrs. Diana Clarke organized a food drive collection for Holy Name of Mary Food Pantry and Blessed Sacrament. Every year, the pantries make sure that deserving families receive a turkey and all of the side trimmings during Thanksgiving. We were so happy to participate this year by delivering a truckload of dry and canned goods for the pantry. For each item a student donated, their class was entered into a contest to win an extra recess. The top three donating classes were FitsPatrick, McCain and Taliercio. This worthwhile venture taught our students the importance of giving and coming together to support the community. Great job Clear Stream Cares.
Thanksgiving Day Parade
Clear Stream Avenue first grade students created the very very first Thanksgiving Day parade. The first grade students marched around the school twice with balloons and a banner to the cheers of students and teachers galore. All of the students created homemade dirigibles and decorated them like the actual Macy's Day balloons. We even had an electronic robot that walked the balloon around the school that was controlled by our steam aid Terrence Smith. Congratulations first grade you have started a clear stream tradition!
Creating a Math Legacy
Clear Stream Avenue and Valley Stream District 30 has joined forces with Legacy Pathways. Legacy is an educational company that is owned and operated by Dr. Selma K. Bartholomew, “Dr. B.” Their theory is “Mathematics is a Language.” As such, learning math in that manner is a proven lever for helping schools increase mathematical concepts in and among children. This partnership involves all stakeholders. Our administrators, classroom teachers, special education teachers and teacher assistants will develop deeper and more meaningful relationships with our students as they embark on this mathematical journey together. The program will target content, build the bridges between Number Sense and Algebra for teachers and create a safe space for math students to address concepts, gaps in understanding, and math challenges. We are excited about math partnerships and appreciate Assistant Superintendent Lewner and the Board for this worthwhile venture.
Global Leaders of Tomorrow
The Global Leaders of Tomorrow Advisor Council is an advocacy and action group of students started by Dr. Garcia-France, the Superintendent of Schools. The purpose of the group is for them to bring awareness to issues faced by youth in the classrooms, schools, communities, country, and worldwide. Several students from all three schools were sworn in at Monday’s Board Meeting to make their community a better place to live. Of the three schools, Clear Stream Avenue has the most members of the newly-formed Global Leaders of Tomorrow Advisory Council, seven in total:
