- Contact speaker ahead of time to let them know what you want your kids to know or share the concept map with the speaker
- Teachers attend and participate - showing this is interesting or necessary
- Summary at the end - review with students what they learned & further inquiry
- Have a plan B in case there is an emergency with speaker

Responses from the "What is Kindness" heart mural?
From the book 'Makers with a Cause' Kelly got ideas to help conserve our oceans via the website/org. Students Rebuild -studentsrebuild.org/challenges/ocean. Kelly and I collaborated to brainstorm activities in which the families would be able to create objects related to ocean life. There were maker activities such as Origami, Legos, and 3D designing. Each time a parent or student created an object Kelly took and shared the photo to to Students Rebuild.com. Kelly also created a huge blue ocean background in which all the creations were placed together to create one large ocean scene. For each photo of each object created Students Rebuild donated $2 to the cause to help conserve our oceans.
One of the most popular stations that evening was the 'I found a quilted heart' station -also in the 'Makers with a Cause" book. At this station parents and students made stuffed fabric hearts that they can leave somewhere for another person to find. A great project to help students develop empathy. The night was a big success as parents were smiling and students were creating and all were able to help contribute to the welfare of others.
Making buttons for a cause.
Thank you Kim for your efforts. The Meals on Wheels crew were overwhelmed by the work of your students.
Students learning following procedures and building resilience.
Her students told me that they "mess up" many times while attempting this challenge while following the procedural text. I asked her kids what was their practice for dealing with frustration and building resilience. Some of the responses they shared were to take a break from what you're doing; to do something else; to pretend that you're good at it; and to keep going.
The kids that say they just keep going I asked what makes you keep going. Some of the responses were they want to finish it; and they feel there's a possibility of solving the cube.
