For Heaven's Sake
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School - September 2019
From the Principal's Desk
As we progress into September, and classes establish a daily routine, we are mindful of the mission we strive toward every day; to provide a top quality education modeled after the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our Lady Queen of Heaven School will strive to educate the total child. I’m reminded of an old saying by Collier, “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.” Our teachers do amazing things, and we celebrate small victories every day.
September is filled with a wide array of activities, all of which enhance our mission to teach children their roll to support our Lord’s work. From football and volleyball season, to fall pictures, pep rallies, the Heavenly Fish Fest and student days of reflection, there are literally dozens of ways to support our programs, and I would encourage you to find a way to become involved for the betterment of the students we serve at our school.
Please help us set our students up for success by establishing a healthy and positive routine so that they may experience the sum of these small efforts. Set the bar high, and stand back with us and admire as our students do astonishing things! I pray all of our families experience great success during this academic year.
In Christ,
Trevor Donnelly

READING is FUN!!! MATH is FUN!!
Various strategies with partners allows us to understand words and put sentences together! Wow! Did you know every WORD must have a vowel? We are having fun working with numbers and discovering how: part + part = a whole.

5th graders engineered contraptions to house their raw egg that was dropped from the FLC gym walkway. Most of the eggs survived the fall while only a few suffered "hairline fractures! The students enjoyed this activity as they got to show off their creative inventions. They learned about potential and kinetic energy.
In ELA class, they have been learning about character traits (physical traits and personality traits) and applied that knowledge to their summer reading project, “The Homework Machine." Students worked with partners to illustrate and describe one of the main characters from “The Homework Machine” – Judy, Kelsey, Sam, and Brenton. Attached are a few pictures of the artists at work!
On Friday, we took our DIBELS test to see how many words we can read in one minute. The 5th grade fall benchmark score is 111 words in one minute. Congratulations to the fastest reader in 5th grade – Ike Irwin who read 203 words! How many words can YOU read in one minute?
5th Grade SPARK
The 5th grade OLQHS students in Mrs. Faul’s SPARK class discussed the design and engineering behind building a house of cards and used the engineering process. This lesson leads up to their STEM curriculum for the year. Mrs. Faul was especially proud of the boys’ determination. They never gave up! This is the only class that has been able to build to this extent. They even decided to build a village!

Art
The new school year has started with a bang! We don't have anyone in the Hall of Fame yet, but several students already have the three required pieces of artwork and only need five in their fan club and five comments. If you have not signed up your child for Artsonia do so now. It is free and there are so many benefits. If you need your child's Screen Name or Parent Code, just contact me at bfoshee@olqhs.org.
Kindergarten began their year with lines and circles, using them to make a spider web and a spider. We are now beginning to learn how to properly draw a face by drawing their own faces. The First Grade classes started off the new school year with their own head-to-toe self portrait. You can find the pictures on Artsonia or hanging in the hallway of the Fine Arts Building.
Second Graders learned all about the six basic shapes--circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, and diamond. As a class we discussed where we can find things in the "real world" made from these shapes. They did a great job and the results are on Artsonia. The Third Graders learned about the composition of a picture. They can be Formal (well-balanced), Informal (out of balance), or Radial (exploding or imploding). They used their six basic shapes to illustrate one of the designs. Fourth Graders really had a drawing challenge. They had to draw both their hand and their shoe. First they had to draw it without looking at the paper or picking up their pencil (Blind Contour). Then they had to draw them for real--looking, erasing, whatever was necessary. These are on Artsonia as well.
My Seventh Grade Band/Chorus/Art students began the year by making a Circular Zentangle using pencils, Sharpies, and Prismacolor Pencil Colors. They are fabulous and decorate the Fine Arts Building Hallway. My Eighth Grade Fine Arts Survey (for High School Credit) began making a Zentangle cover for their notebooks, which will be used all year. We studied their Glossary of Art Terms which they used to write a critique of a famous painting and will use on their Crossword Puzzle Tests. Next we will do a study on Illuminated Manuscripts and they will learn to make a Celtic Knot and color it with Prismacolor Pencil Colors.
Remember, in Art we are busy creating, making messes, and having FUN!

asbestos statement
Each year parents must be informed that the school has complied with all national standards regarding asbestos on campus. Certain vinyl floors and the panels that are below the quad windows will have to be handled appropriately if ever replaced. Our report indicates that existing asbestos is in good condition and we have the highest rating given. You are welcome to examine the asbestos file in the office if desired.
